World Red Cross, Red Crescent Day honors the birthday of Henry Dunant, May 8, 1828, in Geneva, Switzerland. He was the founder of the International Committee of the Red Cross in 1863 and the first recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize.

The International Federation of the Red Crescent Society was created in 1919 and operates within the Islamic world. The two organizations coordinate together, use the efforts of over 97 million volunteers and are governed by International Humanitarian Law to protect human life, alleviate suffering and provide life saving and emergency care worldwide.
