An integral part of NCADD Alcohol Awareness Month is Alcohol-Free Weekend, which takes place on the first weekend (Friday-Sunday) of April to raise public awareness about the use of alcohol and how it may affect individuals, families, businesses, and our communities. During Alcohol-Free Weekend, NCADD extends an open invitation to all Americans to engage in three alcohol-free days. Those individuals or families who experience difficulty or discomfort in this 72-hour experiment should contact local NCADD affiliates, Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), and Al-Anon to learn more about alcoholism and its early symptoms.

The International Day of Conscience promotes a culture of peace based on values, attitudes, and behaviors that uphold freedom, justice, democracy, human rights, tolerance, and solidarity. The United Nations recognizes the need to create stable and peaceful relations, respecting the rights and freedoms of all individuals. On 5 April, the General Assembly declared the International Day of Conscience and called upon Member States, UN organizations, civil society, and individuals to foster a culture of peace with love and conscience in their communities. The concept of a culture of peace originated from UNESCO, emphasizing the importance of intellectual and moral solidarity for lasting peace. Building a culture of peace requires comprehensive education, cultural and social actions, and civic engagement, promoting respect for life, rejection of violence, equal rights, freedom of expression, democracy, justice, and development. It is a positive and dynamic process that encourages dialogue, cooperation, and understanding among nations, groups, and individuals, aiming to transform conflicts through non-violent means and create a harmonious world.

Chicago’s Pizzeria Uno created the Deep Dish pizza in 1943 by chef Rudy Malnati. It became so popular that the company opened its first non-Chicago location in Boston on April 5, 1979. Unlike traditional pizza, deep dish pizza adds the cheese first to prevent burning.

Go Broke Day (1945): April 5

National Go Broke Day honors the 442nd Regimental Combat Team of the United States Army, whose motto was "Go for Broke." The 442nd RCT was an infantry unit composed of American soldiers predominantly of Japanese descent who volunteered to fight in World War II. They emerged as one of the most decorated infantry units in US army history. April 5, 1945, in Seravazza, Italy, the first Medal of Honor recipient from the 442nd RCT, Private First Class Sadao Munemori, was killed in action. National Go Broke Day honors Private Munemori and his brothers of the 442nd RCT, who put their lives on the line for the rest of us.

Gumboot Friday (NZ): April 5

Rainboots, wellies, or gumboots are the symbol of a nationwide effort since 2019 to raise funds to support mental health for New Zealand’s youth. Held annually on the first Friday of April, the fundraising drive aims to prevent 175 youth deaths by suicide and over 3500 attempts each year by connecting vulnerable youth with the needed resources. One way of showing support is wearing gumboots on this day, and another is hosting a fundraiser.

Norman's Medieval Fair is one of the few free medieval fairs in the nation and has been held annually since 1977. Each year the event draws over 250,000 people. The event includes a medieval village with over 200 art and craft booths, food, music, and costumes from the era. PLEASE NOTE: Treat all televised and venue-specific events (sporting, concerts, trade shows, etc.) as estimated. Several factors can cause an event to move dates at the last minute, including weather, strikes, natural disasters, political upheaval, conflicting programming, pandemics, and current events. Because of this, always verify the event with the promotor before committing resources. Read a Road Map Day celebrates an essential component of civilization for the past 3,000 years. The first known road map is the Turin papyrus map showing the travel-friendly riverbeds near Thebes, Egypt, in 1160 BC. GPS devices have replaced standard road maps in recent years, but map reading is essential for everyone. Maps are still used in books, can be drawn, and are critical in understanding historical events as they are often the only reference point. Plus, what happens if the GPS isn’t working? Can you find your way around old school? Most young people today cannot. Take this opportunity to test your map reading skills and make sure you and your children still know how to read a map if it ever becomes necessary (like when traveling in many places overseas where GPS isn’t available). It is a skill that may save your life!

Army Day (1917): April 6

First proclaimed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1942 during the height of WWII, Army Day has been celebrated in America each year since. April 6, 1917, is the day the US entered the First World War. The following is the proclamation in the President's own words. "I have proclaimed April 6 Army Day. That day means more than ever to us this year. We are fighting an all-out war in defense of our rights and liberties. Army Day becomes, therefore, in fact, a total-war day. It becomes a day when all of our citizens in civil pursuits can rally to the support of our armed forces, for only in the united effort of all of our forces—Army, Navy, and civilians—can we find the strength to defeat our enemies. Never before in the one hundred and sixty-six years of our history as a free Republic under God have, our armed forces had so much meaning for us all. We are engaged in our greatest war, a war that will leave none of our lives wholly untouched. We shall win that war as we have won every war we have fought. We are fighting it with a combined force of free men that is, in Lincoln's words, of the people, by the people, for the people of the United States of America. Our Army is a mighty arm of the tree of liberty. It is a living part of the American tradition, a tradition that goes back to Israel Putnam, who left his plow in a New England furrow to take up a gun and fight at Bunker Hill. In this tradition American men of many ages have always left the pacific round of their usual occupations to fight in causes that were worth their lives -from Lexington to the Argonne. In times of peace we do not maintain a vast standing Army that might terrorize our neighbors and oppress our people. We do not like to rehearse interminably the cruel art of war. But whenever a tyrant from across the seas has threatened our liberties, our citizens have been ready to forge and use the weapons necessary for their defense. It is the men of the regular Army together with the citizen soldiers, our friends and relatives and neighbors of a few short days ago, and the men of all our armed forces, that we honor on Army Day." This event was first held in 2021 and is planned annually on April 6. Sexual orientation is defined as heterosexual, homosexual, bisexual, and asexual.

Black Pound Day (UK): April 6

Born in 2020 in the wake of the Black Lives Matter global protest, Black Pound Day in the United Kingdom is a monthly event occurring on the first Saturday of each month (except the first day, which was held in June 2020). The purpose is to ask consumers to support Black-owned businesses on this day by shopping at them or giving their patronage. Musician DJ Swiss created it.
