ABOUT NOVEMBER 2024

November, the eleventh month of the Gregorian calendar (established in 1582 with Pope Gregory XIII), derives its name from the Latin "novem," meaning "nine." It was originally the ninth month in the ancient Roman calendar, which began in March. Despite the calendar reforms that shifted its position, November retained its original name, a lasting testament to its early placement.

November is autumn in the Northern Hemisphere and spring in the Southern Hemisphere. November encapsulates themes of remembrance, gratitude, and preparation, reflecting the diverse ways cultures around the world mark this transitional time.

ASTROLOGY

November 1-22 fall under the water sign Scorpio. November 23-30 are under the fire sign of Sagittarius.

BIRTHSTONES

The birthstones for November are topaz and citrine. Topaz, known for its array of colors, notably yellow and blue, symbolizes love and affection. Legend holds the gem that bestows strength and intelligence to the person wearing it. Citrine, a variety of quartz with a golden hue, is often called the "healing quartz" for its supposed ability to comfort, heal, and calm. It's also believed to bring success and prosperity, often called the "merchant's stone."

FLOWERS

The flower associated with November is the chrysanthemum. In various cultures, chrysanthemums hold different meanings: they symbolize longevity and fidelity in Asia, whereas in Europe, they are typically associated with death and placed on graves. The flower's connection to life and death highlights the dual nature of November as a time of harvest celebration and remembrance of the deceased.

LEGENDS

Folk legends and customs in November follow the themes of remembrance and preparation for winter. One significant event is All Saints' Day on November 1 and All Souls' Day on November 2. These days honor saints and offer prayers for the departed souls, respectively. Each is marked by various customs worldwide, including visiting cemeteries and lighting candles

November is synonymous with Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday in the United States. Rooted in a 1621 harvest feast shared by the English Pilgrims of Plymouth and the Wampanoag people, it has evolved into a day of giving thanks, feasting, and family gatherings

Guy Fawkes Night, or Bonfire Night, is observed on November 5 in the United Kingdom. It commemorates the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605, where Guy Fawkes attempted to blow up the Houses of Parliament. The night is marked by bonfires and fireworks, celebrating the safety of the King and the nation's deliverance from anarchy.
