September 29 is the Feast of Saint Michael and All Angels, or Michaelmas Day, a Christian religious holiday dedicated to Archangel Michael, the guardian, and protector of the people. In 15th century Europe, rent was paid to the landlord four times a year or near the seasons change. Michaelmas Day was one of those four days. It was customary for tenants to present landlords with a goose in addition to their rent payment. Michaelmas marks the end of the harvest, and if the harvest goes well, the lease will be renewed. The custom became known in secular circles as Eat a Goose for Prosperity Day.

International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste: September 29

The International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste calls for the prioritization of efforts by both public and private sectors to reduce food loss and waste. This goal aligns with the more efficient use of natural resources, climate change mitigation, and enhanced food security and nutrition. Approximately 14% of global food is lost after harvest but before retail, and about 17% is wasted at the retail and consumption levels. This waste contributes 8-10% of total global greenhouse gases, contributing to climate instability and extreme weather events which negatively affect crop yields, reduce nutritional quality, cause supply chain disruptions, and threaten food security and nutrition. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, particularly SDG 12, target 12.3, calls for halving global food waste per capita at retail and consumer levels and reducing food losses along production and supply chains. With an estimated 3.1 billion people without access to a healthy diet, and about 828 million people facing hunger, the need to reduce food loss and waste is urgent. As there are only eight years left to achieve the target, the necessity of scaling up action to reduce food loss and waste is paramount. Reducing food loss and waste not only offers immediate climate benefits, but it also enhances the overall sustainability of our food systems. This transformation is crucial for ensuring better planetary and nutritional outcomes for current and future generations.

Mid-Autumn, Zhong Qiu Jie Festival (CN): September 29

Mid-Autumn Festival (Zhong Qiu Jie Festival) in China is celebrated on the 15th day of the eighth month of the Chinese Lunar calendar, typically on the full moon between September and October. Considered a public holiday and the second most anticipated festival in China, it is known by several names, including the Moon Festival, Harvest Moon Festival, and Mooncake Festival. The festival is centralized on three values: • Family & Marriage • Charity • Thanksgiving Folklore relating to the festival involves the couple Hou Yi, an archer, and his wife Chang'e. According to legend, ten suns rose in the sky, and Hou Yi shot nine down, leaving one to light the sky. Because of this, the gods gave Hou Yi an elixir to immortalize him. Rather than take it, Hou Yi gave the elixir to his wife for safekeeping. However, his apprentice, Peng Meng, attempted to steal the potion from Chang'e while her husband was hunting. Chang'e swallowed it, making her immortal. Rising into the night, she chose to stay with the moon to be near her husband. As a token of love, Hou Yi placed her favorite foods in his yard for her at the harvest moon. This story derives from the tradition of setting out food for loved ones and eating mooncakes. The festival's highlight is mooncakes, the eating and displaying of them within a group. The round shape symbolizes unity and family. The festival is also the time to celebrate marriages, and it occurs in several East Asian countries.

Sport Purple for Platelets Day is a part of the National ITP (Immune Thrombocytopenic Purpura) Awareness campaign. _______________ “ITP, immune thrombocytopenia (also known as immune or idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura) is an autoimmune disease. In autoimmune diseases, the body mounts an immune attack on one or more seemingly ordinary organ systems. In ITP, platelets are the target, marked as foreign by the immune system and eliminated in the spleen, the liver, and other means. In addition to increased platelet destruction, some people with ITP also have impaired platelet production. An average platelet count is between 150,000 and 400,000/microliter of blood. If someone has a platelet count lower than 100,000/microliter of blood with no other reason for low platelets, that person is considered to have ITP.1 There is no accurate, definitive test to diagnose ITP.” Platelet Disorder Support Association ____________________ ITP can occur in children and adults. Poisoned Blackberries Day is an anniversary marking the conquest of good over evil. According to medieval lore, blackberries symbolize lawyers and justice. But why poisoned, and does it have anything to do with lawyers? September 29 in the Gregorian Calendar is Michaelmas. During the Middle Ages, Christians celebrated with a feast with roast goose to commemorate the victory of archangel Michael over Lucifer. In the Bible, the archangel Michael battled against the devil in heaven and won. Poisoned Blackberry day marks the anniversary of the day God threw Satan out of heaven, and he landed on a thorny blackberry bush. Furious, Satan spits on the blackberries, poisoning the entire crop for a day. Spoiling the fruit was a bit of a problem. Michaelmas was the "due date" for the completion of the harvest and marked the end of the third quarter in the Christian calendar. Additional quarter-end dates include Lady Day (March 25), Midsummer (June 24), and Christmas (December 25). Michael, representing God's good, battled the devil and won, delivering justice over his evil deeds. Civically, there is an additional tie to the legal profession. Michaelmas marks the commencement of legal and university terms, and it signaled the election of public servants to the office and a time for hiring.

Ask a Stupid Question is a silly holiday with a purpose created over four decades ago in the United States and has spread across the pond to the United Kingdom and then India. It’s intended to encourage students to ask more questions in the classroom. Today, students are encouraged to speak up and ask questions they would be afraid to ask on some other days. Some schools hold competitions to find the craziest question of the year. American teachers created this event during the 1980s as a way to get their children engaged. It has no official sponsor.

Ballerina Day (1863): September 30

Today marks the anniversary of the birth of the first Prima Ballerina Assoluta, Perinea Legnani, on September 30, 1863. Legnani first gained worldwide recognition in 1893 when, as Cinderella, she performed 32 consecutive fouettes en tournant at the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg, Russia. At the time of her career, she was considered the best ballet dancer in the world, and her brilliance was in her technique. On Legnani's birthday, Lario Danza International Ballet holds an annual competition for young dancers. The Pierina Legnani Award is given. Only 11 women in history have earned the title of Prima Ballerina Assoluta. Ms. Legnani died on November 30, 1923, in Italy.
