"In our Nation's earliest days, a vast majority of North America was wilderness—from majestic plains and imposing mountain ranges to dense forests and rushing waterways. Today, protected wild spaces continue to serve as a backdrop for curious and adventurous Americans to seek the thrill and joy of connecting with the sacred spirit of our country's wilderness, offering a wide variety of activities, including hiking, camping, and climbing. This month, as we cherish our vast and vibrant natural heritage, we resolve to preserve its splendors for all who will follow in our footsteps. Aiming to leave future generations with a "glimpse of the world as it was in the beginning," President Lyndon B. Johnson signed into law two historic pieces of legislation that opened a new chapter in American conservation—the Wilderness Act and the Land and Water Conservation Fund Act. The Wilderness Act defined our untrammeled lands as wilderness and created the National Wilderness Preservation System, recognizing forests, parks, and wildlife refuges as having intrinsic value as wild lands worth protecting. The Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) was established out of a bipartisan commitment to ensure that we can protect lands and waters for use and enjoyment by all our people; throughout the last 50 years, it has supported conservation efforts in every State, including tens of thousands of State and local projects through billions of dollars in grants. But a lack of full and secure funding hinders many important LWCF projects that protect critical habitats and provide recreational opportunities—which is why I keep calling on Congress to pursue permanent funding for the LWCF.” Excerpt from 2016 Presidential Proclamation by Barak Obama

PAX Unplugged, Philadelphia (US-PA): September 1-4

PAX is a series of gaming conventions held in Seattle, Boston, Melbourne, Philadelphia, and San Antonio. Founded by Jerry Holkins and Mike Krahulik, authors of the popular web comic Penny Arcade, each PAX is a show dedicated to supporting and celebrating video and tabletop gaming. Since PAX's inception, millions of attendees have enjoyed the expo floor halls filled with booths from major game publishers and independent developers, panels from video game industry insiders, game culture-inspired concerts, LAN parties, tabletop gaming, competitions, and more. HISTORY In 2004, Penny Arcade established a convention exclusively for gaming, following in the footsteps of comics, anime, and other geek hobbies. That year, a 4,500-person event in Bellevue, WA, focused on the gaming community. Subsequent years saw the show double in size until venues reached capacity, prompting the creation of the Boston-based PAX East in 2010. PAX East drew tens of thousands of attendees in its inaugural year. Penny Arcade has not looked back since, quickly expanding to markets worldwide while still staying true to the original formula of celebrating all aspects of gaming and game culture. National Piano Month honors one of the most diverse musical instruments ever created, the piano. This large instrument is the invention of Bartolomeo di Francesco Cristofori, which originated in Italy in 1709. Its varied sound comes from a combination of keys and vibrating strings. In 1991 the National Piano Foundation designated the Peanuts character 'Schroeder' as the official spokesperson for the month. Today it is celebrated by museums and music stores nationwide.

National Preparedness Month was created in 2004 and sponsored by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) under the Department of Homeland Security to encourage people to prepare homes and businesses for emergencies. The outreach informs and educates the public on responding to emergencies, including natural occurrences and terrorist attacks. September was chosen as the National Preparedness Month following the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center in New York. Each year it is proclaimed by the President of the United States.

National Prostate Health Month (NPHM) is a month-long awareness campaign in the United States each September. It aims to increase awareness among men on the importance of prostate health and provide better health screenings for the early detection of cancer. Prostate Cancer is one of the top killers of men over 50. Created by the American Foundation for Urological Disease (AFUD) in 1999, now known as the Urology Care Foundation, it became an official government-sponsored awareness month in 2001 through Senator Conrad Burns. By 2003, President George W. Bush supported designating the month of September as National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. The United Kingdom has a similar awareness month in March.

RMS Titanic Located (1985): September 1

Today is the anniversary of the discovery of the RMS Titanic wreckage. On September 1, 1985, the wreck of the RMS Titanic was located about 600 km south-southeast of Newfoundland under 3,800 meters of ocean. A French-American expedition team spearheaded by Jean Louis Michel and Robert Ballard discovered the key to finding the Titanic was a remote-controlled machine called Argo. The wreckage has two main parts about 600 meters apart. The stern has deteriorated but is still recognizable. The ship's midsection broke and scattered across the seabed. The debris plane is littered with personal belongings of passengers, furniture, and machinery from the ship. The bow remains relatively intact. Before this discovery, numerous attempts were made to locate the famous wreck. Though located, attempts to bring it to the surface have been unsuccessful due to the advanced fragility of the remains.
