Better Breakfast Month coincides with back-to-school. Better Breakfast Month seeks to remind parents and children to eat breakfast if they want to do well at school or work. In a 2000 study of Boston Public School pilot breakfast programs, students who increased their breakfast participation rates increased their math grades, decreased their school absence and tardiness rate, and decreased emotional/behavioral problems. Nearly 60% of staff reported a positive change in student behavior and attentiveness. (Dr. Michael Murphy and Ronald Kleinman, Massachusetts General Hospital) According to a 2002 study conducted by Theresa Nicklas of Baylor College of Medicine, adolescents who eat breakfast are two to five times more likely than breakfast-skippers to consume at least two-thirds of the daily recommended dietary allowance (RDA) of calcium, magnesium, riboflavin, folacin, phosphorus, iron and vitamins A, B6 and D. Nicklas found that the intake of other vitamins and minerals – including zinc and calcium – as well as of protein and carbohydrates, was much higher among those who ate breakfast. Also, fat consumption was lower. (Journal of Adolescent Health, Volume 27, Issue 5). Better Breakfast Month appears to be the inspiration of Delaunay Communication Inc. in Seattle, Washington.

Bhadra (Bhadrapada or Bhaado Bhadra) is the sixth month in the Hindu calendar and occurs at the end of summer in the northern hemisphere. The month is among four sacred to Hindus and considered ideal for pilgrimages. Observant Hindus offer dairy products to the gods, practice simple living, and avoid marriages and celebrations. Bourbon lovers continue to carry forth the tradition each year. Bourbon is a uniquely American liquor, created in Kentucky by Rev. Elijah Craig on June 14, 1789. Some common cocktails made with bourbon include Mint Julep, the Old Fashioned, and the Brown Derby. This month is about celebrating the beverage and learning a little bit about this unique creation within American History. Since 1991, Bardstown, Kentucky, has hosted The Kentucky Bourbon Festival.

Brain Aneurysm Awareness Month, Ntl.: September

National Brain Aneurysm Awareness Month, as deemed by a resolution by the U.S. Senate, aims to raise awareness about the dangers of a brain aneurysm. It is a condition faced by 1 in 50 people in the U.S. each year. Most common in people over 35, brain aneurism occurs when a blood vessel swells in one spot and creates a balloon. Should this balloon burst or leak, it can cause strokes or kill. Aneurysms develop from various risk factors, including infection, tumors, traumatic head injury, drug use, smoking, hypertension, and a family history of brain aneurysms. Approximately 6,000,000 people develop a non-ruptured brain aneurysm every year; even when not ruptured, an aneurysm can lead to fatigue, short-term memory problems, speech problems, loss of balance and coordination, and changes in behavior.

Chicken Boy Day (US-CA)(1960s): September 1

Sometimes referred to as the "California Statue of Liberty," Chicken Boy has stood guard over American pop culture and the famed Route 66 since the 1960s. The actual year the statue was erected is unknown, though September 1 is his birthday. In the 1950s and 1960s, to attract tourists, many companies created iconic representations of their fares to draw in businesses, especially along Route 66. Randy's Doughnut's giant doughnut in Inglewood is another very well-known icon. Chicken Boy received the Governor's Historic Preservation Award in 2010 and is located at North Figueroa Street in Highland Park in Los Angeles.
