You know it is almost Memorial Day in New York City when the Navy Fleet from the mid-Atlantic sails into town. Thousands of sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen share their experiences and ships with the citizens of the tri-state area in the lead-up to Memorial Day. PLEASE NOTE: Treat all televised and venue-specific events (sporting, concerts, trade shows, etc.) as estimated. Several factors can cause an event to move dates at the last minute, including weather, strikes, natural disasters, political upheaval, conflicting programming, pandemics, and current events. Because of this, always verify the event with the promotor before committing resources. LEEP often estimates dates based on the previous year's schedules, as the final dates are only a few months, weeks, or days before the event. Independence Day (ER)(1991/1994): May 24

Eritrea's National Day, also known as Independence Day, is celebrated annually on May 24th. This public holiday commemorates Eritrea's declaration of independence from Ethiopia on May 24, 1991, after a long and arduous struggle for self-determination that lasted for about 30 years. The Eritrean War of Independence began in 1961 when the Eritrean Liberation Front (ELF) initiated an armed struggle against Ethiopian rule. Over time, the Eritrean People's Liberation Front (EPLF) emerged as the leading force in the fight for independence. After many years of conflict, the EPLF finally defeated the Ethiopian forces in 1991, and Eritrea declared its independence. However, it wasn't until May 24, 1993, that Eritrea's independence was officially recognized through a UN-supervised referendum, where the majority of Eritreans voted for sovereignty. Eritrea's National Day is a significant event in the country, marked by various festivities and activities. Celebrations include parades, flag-raising ceremonies, cultural performances, and speeches by political leaders. The day is an opportunity for Eritreans to honor the sacrifices made during the struggle for independence and express their national pride and unity.

Pansexual Visability Day: May 24

It is Pansexual Visibility Day, a day to proudly declare your sexual desire for Homosapiens of every persuasion curated according to your unique preferences. What began as defined areas of sexual orientations: gay, lesbian, bisexual, and heterosexual, has morphed into over forty different identities in the past decade, each with its rainbow style flag, its truth, its change to grammar, and its focus on "I." One of these new designations is pansexual, which those identifying as such insist is different from bisexual. Or, depending on who you consult, not separate but a subset because you can be both. Don't worry if you are confused. Pansexual Visibility Day came into being by LGBTQ+ Twitter activists to celebrate pansexuals and encourage education about their truth. Bisexuality means you are sexually attracted to men and women. Pansexual means you are attracted to men, women and any other of the forty different designations now populating gender identity and human sexuality. You are sexually attracted to human beings, regardless of sex, gender, or identity, and who you are attracted to changes, morphs, and merges as often as you like. Panromantic Visibility Day is another new day. It describes people who change romantic attractions day-to-day or hour-by-hour, whether or not sexual feelings are involved.

Prescription Drug Disposal Awareness Day, (1991): May 24

Prescription Drug Disposal Awareness Day promotes one message: When you're done using your prescription drug, please get rid of it. Steve Pasierb, the president of Partnership for a Drug-Free America, states: "Our research shows that the No. 1 source of medicines that kids abuse is their own home medicine cabinet or a family member or friend's home." With thousands of cases of death due to an unintentional overdose of prescription drugs each year, disposing of unneeded prescription drugs will eliminate temptation and drastically reduce the number of casualties created by this easily assuaged issue. Annually on the birthday of Timothy Strain, May 24, 1991. Strain died on August 6, 2009, of an accidental drug overdose of methadone at the age of 18 when his girlfriend's mother accidentally gave him the drug thinking it was the pain killer Percocet. Strain's death could have been avoided had the medication been disposed of properly when no longer in use.

Schizophrenia Day, World: May 24

World Schizophrenia Awareness Day does not have a specific sponsor, though it is supported by mental health professionals worldwide each year. The actual origins of this event are still being determined, though it is likely that May 24 is the anniversary of something to do with the mental illness (we have yet to find that correlation as of this writing). The date does not relate to the birth or death of Eugen Bleuler, the Swiss psychiatrist who first coined the term in 1908. Schizophrenia is a mental illness currently affecting over 24 million people worldwide.

Senior PGA Championship, Kitchenaid (US-TX): May 24-28

The Professional Golf Association organizes the Kitchenaid Senior PGA Championship for professional players aged fifty and above. Created in 1939, the tournament consists of four rounds of 18-hole play, beginning with 156 players and falling to 72 after the first two rounds. The winner is the player with the lowest total score after 72 holes.

African Liberation/Freedom Day (1958/1963): May 25

The ALD was founded in 1958 when Kwame Nkrumah convened the First Conference of Independent States in Accra, Ghana. Eight independent African states attended the event. In commemoration, April 15 was declared Africa Freedom Day to mark each year of progress via the liberation movement. The day symbolizes the determination of the people of Africa to free themselves from foreign domination and exploitation, often referred to as either imperialism or colonialism. Between 1958 and 1963, national and class struggles intensified in Africa and the developing world. Seventeen African countries won independence over this period, and 1960 was proclaimed the "Year of Africa." The United States and European countries were primarily responsible for the colonialization and exploitive endeavors in the developing world during the last few centuries. For example, during the 1960s, the US government carried out assassinations and attempts on several of Africa's new leaders. The French attempted to hold on to Algiers, resulting in a bloody uprising. The Dutch, Portuguese, and British likewise attended to issues in the region stemming from their previous hold, forcing Africa to organize. On May 25, 1963, thirty-one African heads of state convened a summit to found the Organization of African Unity (OAU). African Freedom Day was later changed to African Liberation Day and moved to May 25 in memory of this meeting.

Geek Pride Day is an annual celebration of geek culture in the US observed since 2008 on the anniversary of the release of the first Star Wars film, May 25, 1977. In 1998 Tim Mc Eacher organized several unconnected events called Geek Pride Festival at a bar in Albany, New York. While it's a US national event, Geek Pride Day is acknowledged and celebrated in Canada and Europe and several other cities such as Halifax, Nova Scotia; Budapest, Hungary; Tel Aviv, Israel; Timi?oara, Romania, and others.

The event marked the end of the British Mandate for Transjordan and the establishment of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, led by King Abdullah I. The British Mandate for Transjordan was established after World War I, following the collapse of the Ottoman Empire. The mandate was meant to be a temporary arrangement, with the ultimate goal of preparing the territory for self-government. On March 22, 1946, the Treaty of London was signed, which officially recognized Jordan's independence, and on May 25, 1946, the British Mandate was terminated, and Jordan became a fully sovereign state. Jordan's National Day is marked by various activities and events throughout the country. Celebrations include flag-raising ceremonies, parades, cultural performances, and speeches by political leaders. The day is an opportunity for Jordanians to express their national pride and unity while honoring the history and achievements of their country since gaining independence.
