Liberty Day, Ntl.(1775): March 23

Today is the anniversary of Patrick Henry's "Liberty" speech on March 23, 1775. In that speech, he said, "I know not what course others may take, but as for me, give me liberty or give me death." Just hours earlier, the British began their march on Concord, which would see the opening shots of the Revolutionary War on April 19, 1775.

Melba Toast Day, Ntl. (AU): March 23

Americans are not the only ones to celebrate food holidays. Australia has National Melba Toast Day. However, unlike most other food holidays, this one has a unique story. Melba toast is named after Dame Nellie Melba, the stage name of the Australian opera singer Helen Porter Mitchell (May 19, 1861-February 23, 1931). Melba toast was created for her by her chef and fan Auguste Escoffier as a part of her diet when she was very ill. Interestingly, he also named the Peach Melba after her.

March 23, 2010, was the day when the Patient Protection & Affordable Care Act (PPACA) was signed into Law in the US, commonly known as the Affordable Care Act (ACA) or Obamacare. Its institution split the nation in two. Together with the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act, this act was the biggest and most significant regulatory overhaul of the US healthcare system since 1965, when Medicare and Medicaid were added. Even with its passage, the United States remains the only advanced economy without universal healthcare and the only advanced economy where getting sick can quickly bankrupt a family.

PAX Dev, Boston (US-MA): March 23-26

PAX is a series of gaming conventions held in Seattle, Boston, Melbourne, and Philadelphia. Founded by Jerry Holkins and Mike Krahulik, authors of the popular web comic Penny Arcade, each PAX is a show dedicated to supporting and celebrating video and tabletop gaming. Since PAX's inception, millions of attendees have enjoyed the expo floor halls filled with booths from major game publishers and independent developers, panels from video game industry insiders, game culture-inspired concerts, LAN parties, tabletop gaming, competitions, and much more. HISTORY In 2004, Penny Arcade established a convention exclusively for gaming, following in the footsteps of comics, anime, and other geek hobbies. That year, a 4,500-person event occurred in Bellevue, Washington, focused on the gaming community. Subsequent years saw the show double in size until venues reached capacity, prompting the creation of the Boston-based PAX East in 2010. PAX East drew tens of thousands of attendees in its inaugural year. Penny Arcade hasn't looked back since, quickly expanding to markets around the world while still staying true to the original formula of celebrating all aspects of gaming and game culture. Tree Planting Day (LS): March 21

The southern African mountain nation of Lesotho greets each spring with its National Tree Planting Day. The nation itself is high in the mountains and has few trees. A barren land of savanna and alpine shrubs, the first colonial settlers began planting trees in the country in 1833. Currently, the Forestry Department aims to achieve five percent tree cover by planting hundreds of thousands of trees yearly.

Twitter Day (2006): March 21

On March 21, 2006, it started with the saying, "just setting up my twttr." Its author, Jack Dorsey. It would be another three months before Twitter would be known to the world when it officially launched on July 15, 2006. Though not very long ago, Twitter, for better or worse, has heavily impacted every nation it touches. Today, it is hard to imagine the world without it or what those five little words would come to mean in the years that followed. Twitter was purchased by Elon Musk in October 2022.
