Dhanu Sankranti marks the day when the sun enters the Dhanu Rashi or Sagittarius, and this is the beginning of the ninth month of the Hindu solar calendar. On this day, Lord Surya, the sun god, is worshipped. In Odisha, this festival is celebrated with much devotion and spirituality. A special delicacy made of sweetened rice flakes, Dhanu Muan, is prepared as an offering to Lord Jagannath. PLEASE NOTE: We use the Indian civil calendar, the official holiday calendar in India. The Hindu faith has many calendars, each specific to different regions and tribes, with dates and celebrations marked by differing positions of the sun, moon, and stars. Las Posadas (C): December 16-24

Las Posadas is an evening event that occurs each year during the week of December 16-24. It commemorates the journey of Mary and Joseph, the parents of Jesus Christ, to Bethlehem and their inability to find lodging once arriving there for the census. Parties are held in homes throughout Mexico, Central, and South America each night. People approaching house parties stand before and sing or say: "In the name of Heaven I ask you for lodging, because She cannot walk, my beloved wife." The host and people inside the house respond: "This is no inn, keep on going. I won't open the door, in case you are a truant." The tradition continues for several verses, with those outside giving clues about who they are. Once the people inside discover who the people outside are, they all enter the home for festivities. Each party wandering from house to house has a little girl dressed as the Virgin Mary and a boy as Joseph. If available, "Mary" rides a donkey. Las Posada parties occur every night and are an excellent way for neighbors to get to know each other and celebrate the season. Posada means "lodging" in Spanish.

South Africa celebrates its Day of Reconciliation on December 16 each year as a national unity day. Accepted as a public holiday in 1995 following the end of the apartheid era in 1994, it marks two anniversaries, one of importance to white South Africans: The December 16, 1864, Voortrekker victory over the Zulu tribes at the Battle of Blood River. And one dear to Black South Africans: The December 16, 1961 founding of the African National Congress' Umkhoto we Sizwe. Today is also known as The Day of the Vow, The Day of the Covenant, or Dingaan's Day. It is the official start of the South African summer and is the first of four major public holidays, including Christmas, Day of Goodwill, and New Year's Day.

Organized by the "Sons of Liberty" as a political protest in defiance of the Tea Act of May 10, 1773, demonstrators dressed up as Native Americans and destroyed an entire shipment of tea from the East India Company by dumping it into Boston harbor. The Boston Tea Party is considered one of the first acts of organized defiance against the British empire and one of the critical events leading up to the American Revolution.

Jasmine Uprising, Tunisia, Arab Spring Begins (TN)(2010): December 17

Today is the anniversary of the Jasmine Uprising, the catalyst for the Arab Spring. On this day, a street vendor, twenty-six-year-old Tunisian Mohamed Bouazizi, had enough. Enough corruption. Enough struggle. Enough brutality under one of North Africa’s most heavy-handed dictators, Ben Ali. Enough of everything. In the early hours of the day, young Bouazizi got up, loaded his wheelbarrow with produce, and headed to the market to sell them. On his way, government authorities confiscated his wheelbarrow and sole source of income and proceeded to beat him in public. In his despair, he walked into the middle of the street, poured gasoline over his head, and lit himself on fire. This single act of defiance ignited the imagination of millions across the Arab world and was followed in quick succession with uprisings in Egypt, Libya, Palestine, Bahrain, and other nations. By February 2011, the brutal dictator would be gone, and Tunisia would be remembered as the spark that ignited much-needed change across the Arab world.

Rejoice Sunday (Laetare Sunday) when is the fourth Sunday of Lent, and Gaudete Sunday is the third Sunday of Advent.
