John F Kennedy Assassination (1963): November 22

The 35th president of the United States of America, John F. Kennedy, was assassinated on November 22, 1963, at 12:30 pm in Dealey Plaza, Dallas, Texas. Upon the death of Kennedy, Vice President Lyndon Johnson was sworn in as the 36th president of the United States aboard Air Force One in Dallas. President Kennedy traveled with First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy and Texas Governor John Connally in a presidential motorcade. Following the assassination, a ten-month investigation conducted by the Warren Commission concluded that the president was fatally shot by Lee Harvey Oswald, who acted alone. Oswald was killed by Jack Ruby, who also acted alone. On the other hand, the United States House Select Committee on Assassinations (HSCA) concluded that the president was assassinated as a result of a conspiracy, that aside from the three rifle bullets that killed the president, there were additional gunshots fired as heard on an audio recording of that day, although the conspirators were never identified. The true story of that day remains a mystery.

National Cashew Day celebrates the sweet nut native to Brazil. Still, it could quickly become a tour-de-force with human rights advocates as in 2011, Human Rights Watch published a blistering report on the plight of cashew laborers in Vietnam. Based upon reporting as late as October 2022, the crisis continues. The largest supplier of cashews in the world is Vietnam. The country has been scrutinized for using forced labor to harvest cashew crops, disguising the operation as drug treatment facilities and the workers as patients. According to Human Rights Watch, cashew "production occurs in so-called drug 'treatment' centers. Daily, Forty thousand drug users are detained in Vietnam, and forced labor is their main "treatment." People trying to recover from drug abuse are used as forced labor to harvest cashew crops. Human Rights Watch talked to men and women who previously interned inside these drug "treatment" centers, some when they were children. They report grueling work, being shocked with electrical batons, beaten by staff, and held for months in locked punishment rooms. A month's work might net them between 75 cents and $7.50 after deductions for food, lodging, and management fees. After being forced to process cashews, many return home battered, in poor health, and indebted, leaving the centers owing officials additional expenses for their "treatment." The cashew continues to be a favorite nut for its sweet flavor. Human rights advocates ask that on National Cashew Day, consumers find out where their cashews are coming from and help bring awareness to the human cost of this delicious nut.

International Fibonacci Day honors one of the most influential mathematicians, Leonardo Bigollo. Bigollo, also known as Leonardo Bonacci, Leonardo of Pisa, and Leonardo Fibonacci, was born in Pisa, Italy, in 1170AD. When the Fibonacci sequence is written in the mm/dd format as 11/23 or 1-1-2-3, you get November 23. Fibonacci sequence of numbers (1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, 144, 233) is simple. The last two numbers add together to create the next, a sequence illustrated through the Fibonacci curve, also known as the Golden Spiral. It is considered the representation of perfection. Fibonacci, translates to "Son of Bonacci." Indigenous People, Ntl. Day of Mourning (1492): November 23

Today is the indigenous people of America's National Day of Mourning. Organized since 1970 by the Native Americans of New England, it's a day of protest against, and a reminder of, the genocide against them. Between 1492 and 1900, 90% of the Native American population in the United States was wiped out by guns, famine, forced relocation, and disease. The National Day of Mourning coincides with Thanksgiving Day on purpose. For Native Americans, it is a day of mourning, not one of thanks.
