International Geocaching Day is the day when treasure hunters (geocachers) all around the world enjoy geocaching. This game involves a GPS (Global Positioning System) device to look for clues and prizes. Geocaching is an outdoor adventure. Players use our free mobile app or a GPS device to find cleverly hidden containers worldwide. There are more than 10 million registered users on Geocaching.com, with more than 800,000 in the U.S., more than 275,000 in Germany, and more than 160,000 in Canada. Over 2.5 million geocaches are waiting to be found in over 180 countries. Geocachers explore the world around them with friends and family. Geocaching is a game that reveals a world beyond every day. The possibility of a discovery hides under park benches, in the forest, and probably a short walk from where you are right now (literally).

Hariyali Teej (H): August 19

Hariyali ( greenery) Teej (third day) is an important holiday for married Hindu women seeking marital bliss and the well-being of their husbands. Hariyali Teej is the 3rd day of the first fortnight in the Hindu month, Shravan (Sawan). It is a celebration of the earth's renewal after a very hot and dry summer. Goddess Parvati, the wife of Lord Shiva, is also worshiped on this day. Legend has it that the Goddess Parvati once underwent a self-imposed penance to demonstrate her devotion to Lord Shiva and was born and reborn on earth 108 times before he took her as his wife. The day was "Teej of Shrawan Month" when Lord Shiva took her as his wife, then Devi Parvati promised every woman who invokes Parvati would experience marital bliss. Women dress up in colorful clothes, wear jewelry, apply mehandi, wear colorful bangles and fast the whole day. The Hariyali Teej celebration comprises dancing and singing. The Hindu faith has many calendars, each specific to different regions and tribes, with dates and celebrations marked by differing positions of the sun, moon, and stars. Homeless Animals’ Day, Intl.: August 19

International Homeless Animals' Day raises awareness of the plight of the animals that do not have owners, often due to overpopulation. ISAR (International Society for Animal Rights) created National Homeless Animals' Day as a call for action in reducing pet overpopulation. Programs and resources that can reduce and even eliminate the increasing number of abandoned pets are communicated to the public. People marking this day organize candlelight vigils, animal blessings, free spay and neuter clinics, and provide education to the public on how to prevent overpopulation and unwanted pets. In the image: This is Charlie Chaplin, one of several feral cats that used to stop by my home for breakfast daily in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. When Charlie started showing up, I already had three, one I brought with me from the US, Sinatra, and two I adopted, Joey and Zoe, from my cat breakfast bar. Once I moved into a new house on camp, he was semi-adopted by a friend down the street. Charlie was a caring and giant loveable cat. He took residence with my friend until she left the company, and Charlie had to fend for himself again. The last time I saw him, Charlie was covered in scars and scratches, several across his face. His weight was significantly down, and he scampered away before I could catch him. Charlie Chaplin is one of the millions of feral cats around the world that would be adoring pets in different circumstances. Charlie Chaplin made an impression. He deserves remembering, and I think he'd like this tribute.

Honey Bee Day, Intl.: August 19

Created in 2009 with USDA backing after lobbying from American beekeepers alarmed by declining bee populations due to herbicide use, Honey Bee Day evolved into an international campaign. There are several types of honey bees, with each showing preference for different crops. If you grew up before the 1990s, you probably remember seeing a lot of bees in the summer. They were everywhere—anywhere there were flowers. Take a walk around your neighborhood today, and more likely than not, you won't see a single bee. Where did they all go? Bee populations have declined 90 percent in the United States since 1962 due to insecticides and other chemicals, disease, global warming and deforestation. Bees, butterflies, birds, and bats are essential to pollination; food won't grow without them. A recent Harvard study found that global crop yields have declined three to five percent due to this significant loss in pollinators. Fortunately, one threat, the bacterial disease American foulbrood, which can wipe out an entire bee colony in three weeks, now has a vaccine. The first ever USDA-approved bee vaccine will be available to beekeepers in the spring of 2023. There are an estimated 20,000 different species of bees. Several have gone extinct (13 in the United Kingdom) in the past 30 years, and others, including the honey bee, are endangered or threatened. There is also a World Bee Day on May 20, which was first held in 2018.

World Humanitarian Day honors humanitarian aid workers for their work in helping people throughout the world. Its purpose is to increase knowledge of various humanitarian activities and honor those who died pursuing humanitarian causes. Established by the United Nations in December 2008 under the General Assembly A/63/L.49 and observed the following year. August 19 was chosen because it is the anniversary of the 2003 bombing of the Canal Hotel in Iraq, in which 22 people lost their lives, including Sergio Vieira de Mello, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and the Special Representative of the Secretary-General to Iraq.

On August 19, 1839, the French government purchased the patent for the Daguerreotype process from Louis Daguerre and Joseph Nicephore Niepce. His is the invention that made photography possible. Rather than keep it just for the French people, the government gifted it to the world so that all people, no matter where they lived, would have access to photography. This selfless gift of technology is celebrated each year on the anniversary of the patent acquisition as World Photography Day.

Popsicle Day (1924): August 19

Popsicle Day honors the popsicle on the anniversary of patent US 1505592 for a frozen confection on a stick, August 19, 1924. Popsicles are the accidental creation of 11-year-old Frank Epperson. On a cool winter evening, he left a mixture of soda flavoring and water on the porch. The following day, he discovered that the drink had frozen during the night’s low temperature and tasted good. Popsicles became a sensation at a fireman’s ball in 1922, where they were introduced. Epperson sold his pops on the stick at Neptune beach in California in 1923. First named Epsicle (Epperson icicle), this simple frozen flavored water or juice on a wooden stick has become a favorite summer staple worldwide.

Potato Day, Ntl.: August 19

National Potato Day honors the versatile root popular the world over. Potato starch packs more vitamins and minerals than other carbohydrates, including wheat and barley. Because of this and its ease of cultivation, potatoes quickly became a staple of European diets once introduced. Potatoes are native to South America, most notably Bolivia and Peru, and were brought back to Europe by Spanish Conquistadors in 1536. In 1589, Sir Walter Raleigh brought the potato to Ireland. By 1621, potatoes returned to the New World and arrived in North America. The potato was the first organic crop cultivated and grown in space in October 1995. The Inca were the first to cultivate potatoes between 8,000 and 5,000 BC.

Vaquita Day, Intl. Save the: August 19 (est)

The vaquita is the most endangered marine mammal in the world. This exquisite porpoise lives in the Gulf of California and averages 4-5 ft in length. Currently, just 10 Vaquitas exist in the wild, and their numbers decline by 50% yearly. Discovered in 1958, vaquita's are nearly extinct due to illegal fishing. As mammals, once caught in nets, they drown. International Save the Vaquita Day brings awareness to this animal and illegal fishing before it disappears forever. Bacon Lovers Day, Ntl: August 20

Happy Bacon Lovers Day. Like so many great things, from sunglasses to pasta, bacon originated in China around 1500BC. By salting pork, the Chinese could preserve it during hot months. The same technique made its way to Europe and eventually America. Bacon is considered an adequate hangover food (ever noticed you seem to crave fatty foods when hungover?), and the choline found in bacon is said to help in fetal brain development. Our favorite bacon recipe at LEEP? Pita chips dipped in classic hummus and dipped again in bacon bits. It's easy, fast, and addictive. PS: For those on halal, kosher, or vegan diets, nobody said your bacon couldn't be turkey, beef, or plant-based, though there is no substitute for the real thing!
