Greencare for Troops Awareness Week: June 18-24

As the weather warms and the grass grows, Greencare for the Troops Week encourages volunteers to help with outdoor care (mowing lawns, pulling weeds, watering plants) at the homes of families of deployed active servicemen and women, the deceased, elderly, and injured veterans. Project Evergreen also hosts a Snowcare for the Troops Week each winter. Hate Speech, International Day for Countering: June 18

Hate speech, amplified by new technologies of communication, has become a prevalent method for spreading divisive ideologies globally. Its unchecked spread can disrupt peace, development, and human rights. In response to increasing trends of xenophobia, racism, and intolerance worldwide, UN Secretary-General António Guterres launched the United Nations Strategy and Plan of Action on Hate Speech on 18 June 2019. This plan defines hate speech as any communication that attacks or uses derogatory or discriminatory language towards a person or group based on aspects of their identity such as religion, ethnicity, nationality, race, color, descent, gender or other identity factors. There is, however, no universal definition of hate speech under international human rights law, and its concept is still being debated, especially concerning the freedom of opinion and expression, non-discrimination, and equality. Education plays a critical role in preventing hate speech, especially in online environments. Digital literacy and global citizenship education are key in equipping individuals with the knowledge and skills to identify and counteract hate speech. The United Nations campaign #NoToHate provides information on how to address hate speech. In July 2021, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution on promoting inter-religious and intercultural dialogue and tolerance in countering hate speech, calling for increased efforts to address this phenomenon. The resolution also proclaimed 18 June as the International Day for Countering Hate Speech, inviting governments, international organizations, civil society groups, and individuals to promote strategies for countering hate speech.

The Battle of Waterloo started on June 18, 1815, near Waterloo, Belgium. Its conclusion marks the end of French domination in Europe and the rise of the United Kingdom as a superpower. The Battle of Waterloo was fought between the French and Allied Seventh Coalition. Napoleon Bonaparte, considered one of the most brilliant war strategists of all time, led on the side of the French. The Duke of Wellington and the Prussian Gebhard von Blucher commanded the Allied Seventh Coalition, composed of Prussian, Belgian, Dutch, German, and British troops. The British ultimately exiled Napoleon to the island of Saint Helena in South Africa. He died at the age of 51 on May 5, 1821.

"World Continence Week is a timely reminder that most people affected by incontinence can be treated, better managed, and even cured. It is important people make the call for help," says the CEO of the Continence Foundation of Australia, Rowan Cockerell. Millions worldwide suffer from incontinence, but they don't need to. It's highly treatable, yet only thirty percent seek help. World Continence Week hopes to change that and encourage those suffering to speak up and get on with their life. According to the Continence Foundation of Australia: Most people affected by incontinence can be better treated, managed, or even cured. About five million Australians – one in four aged 15 years or over—are incontinent. By 2030, the prevalence of incontinence is estimated to increase to 6.5 million Australians. Seventy percent of incontinent people do not seek help. Eighty percent of people who report they are living with incontinence are women. Half of those women are under 50 years. One in three women who have given birth wet themselves. One in five leaks when they laugh. Twenty-five men say they are, or were, incontinent. Incontinence impacts self-esteem, motivation, dignity, and independence.
