Prenatal Infection Prevention Month, Intl.: February

International Prenatal Infection Prevention Month raises awareness and provides information on preventing disease transmission from mother to child. This event has a specific focus on HBV and HIV. In Thailand, for example, all infants receive standard HBV immune globulin (HBIG) injections and HBV vaccine series beginning right after birth. Despite these standard treatments, 10% to 12% of infants born to HBV-infected mothers with high virus levels become infected. Researchers are currently studying the effects of several experimental therapies administered to pregnant women with high levels of HBV (“e-Antigen positive”) and testing infant HBIG injections and HBV vaccine series designed to prevent HBV infection in infants.

Rabbits make wonderful pets, and they can be trained to use a litter box. They’ll come when called, and some will engage their owners in a daily game of tag! Domestic rabbits are delightful companion animals, inquisitive, intelligent, sociable, and affectionate. Well-cared-for indoor rabbits can live for seven to ten plus years. With over 60 breeds, including the Dutch or the droopy-eared German lops and furry Cashmere, rabbits range in size from teeny two-pounders to the 13-pound Flemish Giant. Each year thousands of rabbits are rescued from rabbit mills or bad owners. February is the ASPCA’s annual month set aside to adopt a rescued rabbit.

Raynaud's Awareness Month (UK): February

Observed in the United Kingdom by wearing gloves for the day, the mission of the Raynaud's Awareness Month is to provide educational and emotional support for people with Raynaud's, their families and to raise funds to find a cure. Sometime during the late 1850s, a 27-year-old French woman noticed that the fingers of both hands had become pale and cold. Over the next few weeks, the tips of some of her fingers shriveled and turned black, causing her great pain and discomfort. The doctor who attended her was an equally young man, Maurice Raynaud. He noted the condition and began to study it. Raynaud's disease is akin to veins strangling the blood supply to extremities and asphyxiating hands, feet, toes, and fingers. The lack of blood causes the extremities to die. Inevitably, the condition came to be known as Raynaud's Disease or simply Raynaud's. Dr. Raynaud died at the age of 47 in 1881, but his work identifying the disease and looking for a cure continues.

The Food Marketing Institute reports that nearly 2 million shopping carts (trollies) are stolen each year in the United States, translating into a per-store loss of $8,000 to $10,000 annually, and that's only in the food industry. Like all industries, the cost is passed on to the consumer. Return Shopping Carts to the Store Month is about returning the carts that have wandered off or have been borrowed and have yet to be returned. It's also about safety. Children will often play with the carts left on the streets or in vacant lots unchaperoned. Animals can get wound up in them, and they can roll away into traffic or cause other hazards.
