Super Bowl (US-AZ): February 12

06:20 AM | -
The Super Bowl is the championship game, played annually between the champions of the National and the American Football Conferences. The first Super Bowl occurred on January 15, 1967. It is the most popular sporting event in the United States and watched as much for the game as for the multi-million dollar commercials that premier during its showing. PLEASE NOTE: Treat all televised and venue-specific events (sporting, concerts, trade shows, etc.) as estimated. Several factors can cause an event to move dates at the last minute, including weather, strikes, natural disasters, political upheaval, conflicting programming, pandemics, and current events. Because of this, always verify the event with the promotor before committing resources. LEEP often estimates dates based on the previous year's schedules, as the final dates are only a few months, weeks, or days before the event. If the date is known to be estimated, you will see an (est) following the date in the title.

Violent Extremism Prevention Day, Intl. February 12

06:20 AM | -
Violent extremism poses a significant threat to peace, security, human rights, and sustainable development, impacting countries and regions worldwide. While it lacks a clear definition, recent years have seen terrorist groups like ISIL, Al-Qaida, and Boko Haram shape our understanding of violent extremism and the need to address it. These groups propagate messages of intolerance, challenging our shared values of peace, justice, and human dignity through their heinous acts and effective use of social media. The spread of violent extremism has exacerbated existing humanitarian crises, resulting in the displacement of millions of people. The movement of individuals away from and towards conflict zones has disrupted regions, with some seeking safety while others are drawn into the conflict as foreign terrorist fighters. While violent extremism cannot be justified, it is crucial to recognize that it does not arise in a vacuum. Narratives of grievances, perceived injustice, and the denial of human rights contribute to its appeal. Addressing the root causes of violent extremism involves promoting good governance, respecting human rights, and addressing grievances to prevent its emergence. In response to this global challenge, the General Assembly declared February 12 as the International Day for the Prevention of Violent Extremism as and when Conducive to Terrorism. This day aims to raise awareness about the threats associated with violent extremism and enhance international cooperation in countering it. Member States bear the primary responsibility in addressing terrorism, while intergovernmental organizations, civil society, academia, religious leaders, and the media also play crucial roles. The resolution reaffirms that terrorism and violent extremism should not be associated with any religion, nationality, civilization, or ethnic group. The Office of Counter-Terrorism, in collaboration with relevant entities, is tasked with facilitating the observance of the International Day.

Women's Right to Vote Day (US-UT)(1870): February 12

06:20 AM | -
Who said religious societies and conservatives aren't progressive? Islam was educating women for centuries before Christianity emerged from the dark ages. And then there are the Mormon women of the territory of Utah. Wyoming and Utah granted women the right to vote 50 years before the United States government on December 10, 1869, and February 12, 1870, respectively. In Wyoming, the women almost lost their rights two years later but squeaked by in a territorial congressional vote. Attacks against their right ceased after 1873. The women of Utah had it a little rougher. The US Congress wasn't too happy about women's suffrage or plural marriage and passed the Edmunds-Tucker Act in 1887, stripping Utah women of their voting rights by hiding it in this anti-polygamy bill. Utah was a territory at the time, hoping for statehood. Polygamy was a big part of the new Mormon faith (created in the 1820s), and it was the reason given as to why Utah, unlike Wyoming, was not invited into the union. Not to be deterred, the women of Utah, Mormon and not, would have none of that—they had been voting for 17 years! It wouldn't happen overnight, but once the LDS Church (the predominant authority in the faith) ended its support of polygamy in 1890, the path to statehood was revived. Upon Utah achieving statehood in 1896, part of the deal was that women retained the right to vote—and hold office. To ensure the US government didn't stage another pull-back, Utah's women ensured their voting rights were enshrined in the state constitution, something they learned from their counterparts in Wyoming when it became a state in 1890. Though the Wyoming Territory had granted the right to vote to its female citizens eight weeks before Utah, the first actual vote cast by a woman in the US or its territories occurred in Utah on February 14, 1870, Valentine's Day.

06:20 AM | -
International Condom Day is part of National Condom Month and occurs on the day before Valentine's Day, the day of love. The purpose is to focus attention on safe sexual habits and preventing sexual diseases through the use of a condom. The AIDS Healthcare Foundation traditionally hands out free condoms throughout the world. See your city for details. The condom has existed in one form or another since 1564. The first condoms were developed by Gabriel Falloppio and consisted of a linen bag drenched in salt or herbs to protect men against syphilis. Eventually, it earned the nickname "English Raincoat." By the 18th century, condoms were made in various materials, including sheep and goat intestines, silk, and linen. Men tied them on their bodies to secure them, but they didn't always stay put. The name condom is from the Latin "condus," which translates to "receptacle." Today there are both male and female versions of the condom, typically made of latex (rubber), sheep intestines, or plastic.
