Veganuary is a charity inspiring people to try veganism during January and continue for the rest of the year in the United Kingdom. Recipes and activities are available on the event's website. What does it mean to go vegan? Vegan is not vegetarian, which means you do not eat meat. Veganism is an austere lifestyle movement requiring practitioners to refrain from eating, using, or enjoying any of the following: 1) No meat, dairy, fish, or eggs. 2) No clothing, home furnishings, or tools made from animals, including leather, fur, wool, bone, or silk. 3) No products tested on animals or made with any animal products. 4) No attending or watching entertainment that uses animals, including film, TV, circuses, zoos, rodeos, hunting, and wild animal parks. This event first ran in 2014.

55-MPH Speed Limit Day (1974): January 2

Today is the anniversary of the enactment of the 55-mile-per-hour speed limit in the United States in 1974. Speed limits have been with us since 1757, when they first appeared in Boston. The 55-mile-per-hour speed limit became the maximum speed limit in the United States for 12 years, beginning in 1974 and ending in 1986. The logic behind the limit was to force fuel economy following the 1973 oil embargo, and experts believed the law would force fuel consumption to fall by 2.2%. It only fell between .5 and 1.1%, depending upon the study. As Sammy Hagar famously states in his song “I Can’t Drive 55”, the double nickel speed limit was not popular, especially on rural highways in western states. In 1987 the US Congress raised the national speed limit to 65 MPH. By the end of 1995, National Highway Designation Act permanently killed the idea of a federal speed limit, transferring authority to the individual states.

Cotton Bowl, Goodyear (US-TX): January 2

The Goodyear Cotton Bowl is an annual college football game played in Arlington, Texas. J. Curtis Sanford, a Dallas oilman and business executive, founded the game as a promotion. He guaranteed each institution $10,000, pitching TCU against Marquette on January 1, 1937, at Fair Park's Cotton Bowl Stadium before 17,000 fans. In 1941, the Southwest Conference (SWC), with the champion continuing to the Classic as the host institution. In 1998, a partnership was formed to create one of the top collegiate matchups in postseason play. Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company became the official title sponsor of the game on November 7, 2014.
