People following the Chinese religious calendar celebrate it on the 8th day of the 12th lunar (as opposed to solar) month in the Chinese Calendar. This day is the anniversary of his becoming the Buddha. A common misconception is that Siddhartha Gautama was born in India. He was born in Nepal, and the tiny Himalayan country takes great pride in this fact!

Friday the 13th: January 13

Friday the 13th is an unlucky day in Western superstition, and it occurs when the 13th day of the month falls on a Friday in the Gregorian calendar. The superstition surrounding this day may have arisen in the Middle Ages, originating from the story of Jesus' last supper and crucifixion in which there were 13 individuals present in the upper room on the 13th of Nisan (Maundy Thursday), the night before his death on Good Friday. While there is evidence of Friday and the number 13 being considered unlucky, there is no record of the two being referred to as incredibly unfortunate before the 19th century. According to the Stress Management Center and Phobia Institute in Asheville, North Carolina, an estimated 17 to 21 million people in the United States are affected by a fear of this day, making it the most feared day and date in history. Some people are so paralyzed by fear that they avoid doing business, taking flights, or even getting out of bed. An estimated US$800 to $900 million is lost in business on Friday the 13th, although no scientific evidence exists.

Jackson-Lee Day (Lee-Jackson Day): January 13

General Robert E Lee and General Thomas 'Stonewall' Jackson were confederate officers representing the South during the American Civil War. Both are Virginia natives born on January 19th and 21st, respectively. In recent years there has been a backlash against all celebrations of the confederacy and its icons. Though once a state-observed holiday in Virginia, increasingly counties and cities are bypassing it. With African Americans, tying this event to the National Martin Luther King holiday weekend is insulting. Lee and Jackson were slave owners and fought to preserve slavery. Until 2000, the state celebrated all three men on the same day.

Korean American Day honors the first 102 Korean immigrants to arrive in the United States on January 13, 1903. The US congress set aside this day in 2005 with a resolution. The Korea Economic Institute of America annually sponsors a highly anticipated luncheon in Washington, DC, in honor of the anniversary. Members of the Korean-American community throughout the United States celebrate this day.

Rubber Ducky Day (1970): January 13

Peter Ganine patented his sculpture of what would become the 'rubber duck' in the 1940s and chose to reproduce it as a floating toy, resulting in over 50 million sales. Rubber Ducky day honors the character Rubber Ducky's birthday, proclaimed by Sesame Street as January 13. The yellow duck became a popular character on the children's television show through its appearances with the character Ernie who first sang the "Rubber Ducky Song" on an episode in February 1970. The song, surprisingly, made it to 16 on the Billboard Top 100 charts on September 26, 1970.

Santos Tour Down Under is Australia's largest cycling race, with a rich history as the premier bike race in the southern hemisphere. The first race in 1999 saw local rider Stuart O'Grady taking the win. Since then, numerous internationally renowned cyclists have joined the honor roll. The event has grown year after year to become the biggest cycling race in the southern hemisphere.
