Since 1991 the International Herb Association has chosen an herb or spice to represent that year. 2023 is the year of Ginger. Ginger is used in several ways but is best known as a spice and a natural antacid for stomach upset. Perhaps our favorite use is with fish. Ginger negates fishy flavor and smell. How? Slice it thin and tuck it into the fish meat before baking, grilling, or poaching. Make sure to include some in the marinade. We learned this trick when taking a Chinese cooking class in Saudi Arabia, and it works wonders!

Herb—Year of Sage, Intl.: 2023

Each year one flower and one vegetable are chosen for focus by the Fleuroselect Home Garden Association. 2023 is the International Year of Sage (Salvia officinalis). Sage is a perennial flowering herb with white, purple, pink, or blue. Its leaves are a dusty green, with Salvia officinalis being the variety used in cooking. The healing powers of sage go back thousands of years, and legend suggests that those with sage in their gardens prosper in business.

National Human Trafficking Awareness & Prevention Month is an initiative of ECPAT-USA, an association of travel and entertainment companies that seeks to protect every child’s fundamental human right to grow up free from the threat of sexual exploitation and trafficking. The primary objectives of this organization and the month are to: 1) Advocate for federal and state legislation that prevents exploitation, protects children and guarantees that children subjected to sexual slavery or sex trafficking will not face prosecution in court for prostitution. 2) Promote corporate responsibility among private companies with a strong focus on tourism. 3) Educate first responders and ordinary citizens about this issue so that they can identify victims and join us in the fight to protect children better. 4) Empower youth to take the lead against human trafficking by equipping them with the knowledge and tools necessary to help them become activists against this terrible trade.

Stockmen work with animals, caring for them, raising them, and seeing to their health and needs. Established in 2010, Manuary™ raises funds to support research and improve clinical care for patients suffering from head and neck cancer. Men are four times more likely to acquire this type of cancer. In support of Manuary, men allow their beards to grow by not shaving for 31 days! The ultimate goal of Manuary is to improve cure rates and quality of life for patients suffering from this disease. Head and neck cancer is the sixth most common cancer worldwide. Historically linked to tobacco and alcohol use, new associations link it to the human papillomavirus (HPV), which is on the rise. Head and neck cancers and their treatment can profoundly impact patient quality of life, as facial appearance, voice, breathing, and swallowing can all be compromised. Survival with contemporary treatment consisting of radiation, surgery, and chemotherapy can be successful; however, up to 50% of patients with advanced cancers die from the disease.

Mummers Parade, Philadelphia (US-PA): January 1

Attracting over 100,000 people annually, the Mummers Parade is a 120-year-old+ tradition featuring over 10,000 men, women, and children dressed in ostentatious costumes twirling, sashaying, pirouetting, and strutting down the city's main streets. Mummers are men and women of all ages who belong to more than 40 organized clubs that make up the parade participants. The clubs split into five categories — Comics, Wench Brigades, Fancies, String Bands, and the Fancy Brigades — function mainly to stage their lively performances on New Year's Day and at other events throughout the year. Mummery is a Philadelphia tradition spanning generations and originated in ancient Rome.
