Created in 2009, Argyle Day attempts to brighten up the winter by encouraging everyone to wear something argyle on this day. Argyle is the pattern of the Campbell Clan, which originated in Argyll, western Scotland, beginning in the 17th Century. It was a sign of rebellion in cloth promoting anti-establishment attitudes toward The Crown. Today it is often associated with the Windsor family or preppies, but argyle is the Campbell clan and Scottish rebel through and through. The pattern is diamonds upon diamonds and may be displayed in multiple color combinations.

Rather than buckle down and work within the democracy, they don their fascism and attack the country's capital. Deja vu? Didn't we already do this—unsuccessfully? It didn't work for American fascists on January 6, 2021. What made you think it would work for Latino fascists on January 8, 2023? The history and story behind this are virtually the same as the January 6 attack on the US capital by trumped-up malcontents, misled by social media and power-hungry politicians. There is no reason to go into it again. Fortunately, in Brazil, so far nobody has died. This writer lived in Brazil when the first elections were held at the end of military rule in the early 1980s. Seeing this disgrace unfold on January 8 horrified me. Brazil is better than that. What are you trying to do, make The 3% (a survival fiction series) into a prophecy rather than a great dystopian fantasy? Sério, Brasil?

Folic Acid Awareness Week, Ntl.: January 8-14

National Folic Acid Awareness Week is an awareness campaign by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Folic acid is a B-vitamin that is necessary for proper cell growth. If taken before and during early pregnancy, folic acid can prevent up to 70% of neural tube defects within the brain and spine. The CDC and the U.S. Public Health Service recommend that all women between the ages of 15 and 45 consume 400 micrograms (mcg) of folic acid daily to prevent two types of neural tube defects, spina bifida and anencephaly. Since these congenital disabilities develop within the first few weeks of pregnancy, it is essential to have enough folic acid in your body BEFORE becoming pregnant and to continue getting enough folic acid during early pregnancy. Women need folic acid even if they are not planning to become pregnant, as nearly half of all pregnancies in the United States are unplanned.

Midwife's / Women's Day (GR): January 8

The Greeks know how to make a celebration fun. The Day of Agia Domnikes, Midwife's or Women's Day in Greece, is an annual celebration for women of childbearing age. Women own the town and spend the day dining and pampering themselves. Men are required to care for the children and housekeep for the day. In some smaller villages, men caught outside face dousing with a bucket of cold water and are promptly ordered home for the rest of the day. As with many traditions, this day originates in the Bible. It's tied to Saint Agia Domnikes, the midwife believed to have helped the Panagia with the birth of Jesus Christ. Christ's baptism is celebrated on Epiphany in Greece, and the Day of Agia Domnikes occurs two days later. The water ritual evolved from the practice of pouring out water in preparation for giving birth. In past eras, women kissed a sausage or leek and presented gifts to the ceremonial midwife. Today they eat the sausage, drink wine, and soak wandering men in cold water. What fun!

Rotating Earth Day (1851): January 8

Physicist Jean Foucault had many theories he would go on to prove. But, on January 8, 1851, he tested one of those theories. He believed the earth, being spherical, rotated on an axis. This axis causes day and night and contributes to the seasons. Using a device he designed called the Foucault pendulum, he could prove the earth did rotate on an axis from his home in Paris, France. Rotating Earth Day marks that anniversary.
