The largest annual sporting event dedicated to charity, The American Express, formerly The Desert Classic and Bob Hope Classic, is a PGA golf tournament open to professionals, celebrities, and amateurs. Bootleggers are smugglers, sometimes distillers, who bring in alcoholic beverages where they are either taxed or prohibited. National Bootlegger's Day marks two special anniversaries on January 17. The birthday of bootlegger Al Capone: January 17, 1899 18th Amendment (Prohibition) goes into effect: January 17, 1920 The term 'bootlegger' refers to the flask smugglers used to hide in the top of their boots. In the age of the Old West, bootleggers smuggled liquor to Native Americans. With the advent of prohibition in the 1920s, it took on a whole new meaning.

Cable Car Day (1873): January 17

National Cable Car Day marks the anniversary of the use of the first cable cars created by Andrew Hallidie in San Francisco in 1873. Hallidie was born in England and moved to the US in 1852. Once stateside, he created the wire-rope suspension bridge across Sacramento's American River and applied the same technology ore cars, allowing them to be pulled using underground cables. A little more than 20 years later, Hallidie started working on his cable cars in San Francisco to replace the hilly city's dangerous and unreliable horse carts. Today, cable cars are one of the most emblematic aspects of the West Coast city.

Ekadashi is a Hindu observance that can fall into two categories: annually and monthly. Sattila or Tilda Ekadashi falls on the 11th day of the waning moon (Krishan Paksha) during the fortnight of the Hindu month of Magha. Christian Unity Week, Intl. (Northern Hemisphere): January 18-25

At least once a year (January in the Northern Hemisphere, June in the Southern Hemisphere), Christians are reminded of Jesus’ prayer for his disciples that “they may be one so that the world may believe” (see John 17.21). Hearts are touched, and Christians come together to pray for their unity. Congregations and parishes exchange preachers or arrange special ecumenical celebrations and prayer services. The event that connects to this unique experience is the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. Traditionally, the week of prayer is celebrated between 18-25 January, between the feasts of Saint Peter and Saint Paul. In the southern hemisphere, where January is a vacation time, churches often find other days to celebrate it, for example, around Pentecost, which is also a symbolic date for unity.

Peking Duck (roast duck), a dish originating in Beijing (formerly called Peking), China, could be considered a diplomatic dish. It was served to then Secretary of State Henry Kissinger on July 10, 1971, and he immediately fell in love with the dish, marking the beginning of US/China relations. The delicacy first appeared during the Yuan Dynasty under Kublai Khan (1279–1368 AD) and was popularized during the Ming Dynasty (1368 to 1644 AD) through the imperial court.
