Multiple screening tests for cervical cancer and vaccines are available that target the human papillomavirus (HPV). HPV is the leading cause of cervical cancer. However, most women who have cervical cancer fail to be screened. The pap smear is a standard part of the recommended annual women's exam and is used to detect it. When found early, cervical cancer is highly treatable and doesn't cause major disruptions to life. If caught late, however, it can be deadly.

From Arabia, it spread to Europe. From Europe, it traveled with the pilgrims to the New World. Today one-third of the milk produced in the US each year goes to create cheese.

Chinese New Year is a significant holiday in China and Chinese communities worldwide. It is treated much like Christmas in the West or the Eid holidays in the Islamic world.

Festivities last 15 days and are now known as the Spring Festival in China. Red packets with money in even number denominations and gift exchanges remain favorite traditions. Families travel far and wide to be together. Preparation of holiday foods specific to the event occurs the night before the Chinese New Year. This reunion dinner is the primary feast.

Retailers pile on the specials leading up to and during the festivities. Activities culminate on the 15th day with the Lantern Festival, marking the end of the annual Chinese New Year Celebration. Chinese companies typically shut down for the two weeks of the Chinese New Year. This time is about celebrating.

The Chinese calendar is the backdrop of the Chinese year and is based upon the moon's phases and runs in 12-year cycles, each year denoting a different animal in the Chinese astrological lineup. 2023 is the year of the water rabbit. Numerically, this year would be 4721.

The rabbit is associated with the moon and the early daylight hours. Men born under the rabbit are polite, and women born this year are very social. Chocolate Cake Day: January 27

Love chocolate cake? Then you have James Baker to thank. Baker invented chocolate as we know it today in a form that could be cooked. In 1764 Mr. Baker placed beans between millstones and ground them to dust. As a powder, it could be mixed with liquids or solids to change the flavor, the same way you add salt or other seasonings. However, this process was quite expensive, so only the wealthiest could afford it. By the early nineteenth century (1828), Conrad Van Houten developed a method for extracting cacao liquor from the fat in the cocoa bean making chocolate an affordable ingredient, and its popularity took off. Devil’s Food cake by the Pittsburgh-based Duff Company was the first chocolate cake mix. However, WWII got in the way, and at the end of the war, Duncan Hines and General Mills burst on the scene with their cake mixes and took nearly half the market between them. By the millennium, artisan chocolate cakes, those without flour and closer to the consistency of fudge brownies with less sugar, became the rage. However you like your chocolate cake, today is the day to enjoy it. Indulge!

Chocolate Covered Cherry Day, Ntl.: January 3

Chocolate Covered Cherry Day celebrates the cordial of cherries covered in chocolate. The idea of covering fruits, nuts, and even nougat with chocolate wasn’t possible until the 19th century. The technology needed to separate the chocolate from cocoa butter wouldn’t be invented until 1828 by Conrad Van Houten in today’s Netherlands. Before this process, chocolate was used as a spice. Other techniques, including conching, invented by Rudolph Lindt in 1879, would eventually lead to that box of chocolates and candy bars we are familiar with today. Chocolate Covered Cherry Day is an unofficial holiday with no sponsor.

Christian Unity Week, Intl. (Northern Hemisphere): January 18-25

At least once a year (January in the Northern Hemisphere, June in the Southern Hemisphere), Christians are reminded of Jesus’ prayer for his disciples that “they may be one so that the world may believe” (see John 17.21). Hearts are touched, and Christians come together to pray for their unity. Congregations and parishes exchange preachers or arrange special ecumenical celebrations and prayer services. The event that connects to this unique experience is the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. Traditionally, the week of prayer is celebrated between 18-25 January, between the feasts of Saint Peter and Saint Paul. In the southern hemisphere, where January is a vacation time, churches often find other days to celebrate it, for example, around Pentecost, which is also a symbolic date for unity.
