International Animal Shelter Appreciation Week is initiated by The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and observed in many nations through the Humane Society International. This awareness campaign honors animal shelters and the dedicated people who work in them throughout the world. During this event, people are encouraged to support their local animal shelter by becoming educated in their services, volunteering, or donating supplies. Additionally, this week seeks to educate people about the threats confronting animals, including puppy mills, dog fighting, abuse, and search and rescue during natural and manmade disasters. The International Humane Society helps all animals, from mice and rabbits to horses, cattle, and eagles. This week, learn about what they do in your country and support or volunteer if you can.

Check Your Batteries Day (US/CA): November 6

Check Your Batteries Day occurs twice a year and coincides with time changes when we spring forward for spring and fall back to standard time in the fall. FEMA chose this day as the logical opportunity for people to remember to check the batteries in their smoke and CO2 detectors and emergency radios, flashlights, and other powered items for emergencies.

Daylight Savings in Fiji & Tonga commences on the 1st Sunday of November (Spring Forward) and ends on the 3rd Sunday of January (Fall Back). On this day we move the clock one hour ahead at 2AM in November or one hour back in January at 2AM on Sunday. The saying, "spring forward, fall back," is an excellent way to remember. The memory tool works in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. American Benjamin Franklin was the first to propose daylight savings time (DST) in 1784. Modern DST began in 1895. Throughout history, several variations were adopted, ranging from 30 minutes to two hours. Not everyone observes DST, which can make setting appointments very challenging. The primary purpose of DST is to make better use of daylight hours for farming, early morning activities (such as children walking to school in the light instead of dark), and saving energy. Green March Day, (MA)(1975): November 6

On November 6, 1975, nearly 350,000 Moroccans led a mass demonstration in Spanish Sahara known as the Green March. The unarmed group arrived in the city of Tarfaya and claimed the land for Morocco. On November 14, 1975, a treaty between Morocco, Spain, and Mauritania was signed, making it so. To this day, it is the largest peaceful march in history.

Gustavus Adolphus Day (SE)(1632): November 6

The king of Sweden, Gustavus Adolphus, reigned from 1611 until his death on November 6, 1632. Under his military leadership, Sweden became a European power. He is considered one of the great commanders in history and noted for his use of combined arms and administrative abilities in matters of state. Adolphus perished in the Battle of Lutzen. Gustavus Adolphus Day is a public holiday in Sweden.

New York Marathon (US-NY): November 6

Orphan Sunday is an international outreach organized locally through various Christian churches and parishes.
