Kindness Day, World (1998): November 13

The World Kindness Movement introduced World Kindness Day, a worldwide organization comprised of NGOs. The observance aims to spread kindness and highlight people's kind deeds in a given community. It is celebrated on the anniversary of the 1st World Kindness Movement® General Assembly held in Tokyo on November 13, 1998, and the 35th anniversary of the Small Kindness Movement of Japan, which had brought the signatories of the 'declaration of kindness' of the World Kindness Movement together in 1997.

Remembrance Sunday: November 13

Remembrance Sunday is the day churches in the Commonwealth of Nations commemorate those whose lives were lost in the line of duty during WWI. This date recalls the end of World War I, occurring with German representatives and the Entente, ending the hostilities “at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.” WWI officially ended with the Treaty of Versailles on June 28, 1919. It falls on the 2nd Sunday of November, near Remembrance Day, which occurs on November 11.

Since 1956, International Optimist Clubs have hosted Youth Appreciation Week to demonstrate a commitment to young people. Youth Appreciation week can be held anytime during the year, but the most common dates are the third week of November. High Schools typically select a student to represent them at the annual local chapter's Optimists Dinner. It recognizes the accomplishments of the youth in the home, school, place of worship, and community.

National Apprenticeship Week, 2018 A Proclamation "Under my Administration's policies, our Nation's economy is booming and Americans have more opportunities than ever before. Men and women from all walks of life are moving off the sidelines and into the workforce. In this economic context, our country needs workers with world-class skills and abilities to fill vacant positions in the labor force. During National Apprenticeship Week, we recognize the importance of apprenticeships in helping our country's hardworking people develop the competencies that enable success in today's dynamic, 21st century economy. As a lifelong businessman who has hired thousands of workers, I am a strong believer in the apprenticeship model, and my Administration is committed to expanding apprenticeship opportunities. Apprenticeship programs, when implemented effectively, provide workers with an opportunity to "earn and learn" on the job, and pair workplace education with classroom instruction, accelerating the learning process for participants and increasing their marketability. Since I took office, American employers have hired over 400,000 apprentices. In 2018 alone, we committed $145 million to diversify and scale apprenticeship programs, and we provided an additional $150 million in grant opportunities to promote apprenticeships in industries where they have not traditionally existed, including advanced manufacturing, banking and finance, information technology, and healthcare. In addition, as a result of our Pledge to America's Workers, in just 3 months, we have secured commitments from more than 160 companies and associations to provide jobs, education, and workforce development opportunities to 6.4 million American workers. In June of last year, I signed an Executive Order creating the Task Force on Apprenticeship Expansion, which focused on identifying proposals to cultivate apprenticeships across all sectors of the economy and reform ineffective education and workforce development programs. The Task Force was composed of representatives from business, the trades, labor and industry groups, and educational institutions; each participant contributed a unique set of insights and experiences. The Task Force helped my Administration map out a strategy for creating new, industry-recognized apprenticeship programs that will encourage employers and industries to adopt the apprenticeship model. In addition to supporting apprenticeships, I am advancing tax and regulatory policies that are increasing opportunities for all Americans. Last month, the unemployment rate dropped to 3.7 percent, its lowest point in nearly 50 years, and more Americans are working today than ever before in our history. At the same time, right now, there are 7 million unfilled jobs in our country. By successfully deploying the apprenticeship model, the United States can build a workforce strong enough to quickly fill all of those jobs and better compete on the global stage. This week, I encourage all participants in our economy, from business leaders to government officials to educators, to join in our efforts to expand apprenticeship programs. Education Week, American: November 14-18

American Education Week is the joint initiative of the US Department of State and the US Department of Education. It is an opportunity to celebrate the benefits of international education and student exchange worldwide. It focuses on programs that prepare Americans for a global environment and attract students from abroad to study, learn, and grow through exchange experiences. Individuals and institutions, including schools, colleges and universities, embassies, international organizations, businesses, associations, and community organizations interested in international education and exchange activities, participate in this event. A personal note from Laura: From 1982-1983 I was a Rotary International Exchange student and spent my junior year of high school in Brazil. To this day, it remains one of the most influential periods of my life. Not only did I get to live in another culture, but it also opened my eyes to the rest of the world. LEEP Calendar is a testament to my love of cultural diversity and would not have been possible without that exchange student experience. Since, I've worked for a multinational company in the Middle East, spent extensive time in the United Kingdom, spoken three and a quarter languages (my Arabic is amusing), and traveled to more than 56 countries. My love of the ex-pat experience and the need to be surrounded by a multitude of cultures creatively and intellectually is a direct result of taking part in a foreign exchange program. It has allowed me to be more aware of issues in the US and more critical of perceived wisdom. There is more than one way to solve a problem, and each culture has its unique positives and negatives. If you have the opportunity to study or work in another country, do it. If you can't, host someone who is. The gift to yourself and the nation is priceless!
