Halloween is one of the most famous and celebrated holidays in the United States. Each year, on the eve of All Saint's Day, October 31, American kids and grown-ups dress up as mythical monsters or historical and pop-culture figures and honor the dead and their spirits. The ritual of trick-or-treating, knocking on the doors of neighbors dressed in costume, is a highly anticipated event and considered a right of passage in the United States. The neighbor provides a treat, usually candy, in order not to be the victim of a trick. Halloween is said to be the Catholic continuation of the ancient Celtic festival Samhain, a time when ghosts and other creatures of the night were supposed to roam the land. The holiday has been celebrated in one form or another since 834 BC. Aside from dressing up, Halloween is a celebration of food and the harvest. Pumpkins, apples, cake, and nuts are just a part of the traditional Halloween table. Carving pumpkins into jack-o-lanterns to ward off evil spirits is another time-honored tradition.

In 33AD, the year Jesus Christ was crucified, the worldwide population was estimated at 150 million to 330 million, on the high end, roughly the population of the United States. It would take 1,600 years for that number to double to 603 million. Near 1820 is when the world hit 1 billion people, two-thirds of the population of China or India today. Over the next 110 years, the world's population nearly tripled, hitting 2.7 billion in 1930. It would take barely 57 years to double to 5 billion in 1987. Applejack Month: October

National Applejack Month occurs each year in October and celebrates the first original distilled liquor in the United States, also known as "Jersey Lightning." Applejack is an early colonial drink made from hard cider, wine, or beer. To make it, simply freeze the beverage, peel off the ice (the water component), and what remains is highly concentrated alcohol. The process is called "freeze distillation." Applejack grew in popularity when the reverend John Chapman (Johnny Appleseed) worked his way up and down the Ohio River, distributing apple tree seeds to the people and instructing them on how to create applejack from the fruits of their labor. Applejack is used in various cocktails and continues to be distilled today by Lairds of Scobeyville, New Jersey, a licensed distillery since 1780.
