The Women’s National Book Association created National Reading Group Month in 2007 to mark the anniversary of the association’s founding in 1917. The mission of National Reading Group Month is to: a) Increase public awareness of the joy and value of shared reading. b) Provide a time for reading groups to celebrate their accomplishments and plan for the future. c) Provide opportunities for individuals to join an existing reading group or start a new one. d) Encourage libraries, bookstores, and organizations to host special reading group events.

Sarcastic Awareness Month (which should be Sarcasm Awareness Month, grammatically); perhaps someone is being sarcastic? Sarcasm is humor that uses irony to make fun of situations. Sometimes it is referred to as "dry humor" or "mean-spirited." However you define it, this month is about finding the irony in everyday situations and poking fun at reality. Sarcastic Awareness Month is an unofficial event with no sponsor. However, we are directing you to the Sarcasm Society for the expertise and sarcastic ideas perfect for observing this month.

Spina Bifida Awareness Month, Ntl.: October

National Spina Bifida Prevention Month seeks to raise awareness about Spina bifida, or "split spine." Spina bifida is a congenital disabilities where the backbone and membranes fail to close around the spinal cord. It's not 100% clear what exactly causes spina bifida, but it's strongly believed that it combines genetic and environmental factors. Spina Bifida is a birth defect occurring in the first month of the pregnancy before most women know they are pregnant.

The opossum is the only marsupial native to North America. Like kangaroos, it carries its children in a pouch, and possums have existed since the age of dinosaurs. Possums benefit the ecosystem immeasurably and should be welcomed in your yard. They eat cockroaches, other insects, snails, mice, rats, fruit, plants, eggs, frogs, birds, snakes, roadkill, and people's food. Unlike rodents, possums have high immunity to disease and tend to be a low health risk for humans, even less than cats and dogs. Opossums tend to be active at night, roaming woods and alleys. Because they have long hairless tails, possums are often mistaken for rats. As stated previously, they eat rats and mice and the horror of city-living cockroaches. Should you find one camping out in your yard, thank your stars; it will keep the pests away.

Stamp Collecting Month, Ntl: October

Before 1840, only the wealthy could afford to send letters further than their town. The postage stamps' invention in England by Sir Rowland Hill on May 6, 1840, would change that. The postage stamp did for 19th-century families and friends what Facebook and Skype have done for 21st-century families and friends: it put people in touch economically, quickly, and efficiently. March 3, 1847, was the date the US Congress approved the first postage stamp. It went on sale July 1, 1847, with a five and ten-cent version, the cost today for overnight letter delivery. With email and electronic stamps, fewer people use the humble postage stamp to send letters. But this doesn't diminish the cultural heritage of these tiny pieces of art. The US Postal Service is the primary organization behind this month, and it usually initiates it with the release of a unique collectible stamp each year.
