Mid-Autumn, Zhong Qiu Jie Festival (CN): September 10

Mid-Autumn Festival (Zhong Qiu Jie Festival) in China is celebrated on the 15th day of the eighth month of the Chinese Lunar calendar, typically on the full moon between September and October. Considered a public holiday and the second most anticipated festival in China, it is known by several names, including the Moon Festival, Harvest Moon Festival, and Mooncake Festival. The festival is centralized on three values: • Family & Marriage • Charity • Thanksgiving Folklore relating to the festival involves the couple Hou Yi, an archer, and his wife Chang'e. According to legend, ten suns rose in the sky, and Hou Yi shot nine down and left one to light the sky. Because of this, the gods gave Hou Yi an elixir to immortalize him. Rather than take it, Hou Yi gave the elixir to his wife for safekeeping. However, his apprentice, Peng Meng, attempted to steal the potion from Chang'e while her husband was hunting. Chang'e swallowed it, making her immortal. Rising into the night, she chose to say with the moon to be near her husband. As a token of love, Hou Yi placed her favorite foods in his yard for her at the harvest moon. From this story, the tradition of setting out food for loved ones and eating mooncakes derives. Mooncakes, the eating and displaying of them within a group, is the festival's highlight. The round shape symbolizes unity and family. The festival is also the time to celebrate marriages—the celebration occurs in several east Asian countries.

OPEC Founded (1960): September 10

September 10 marks the anniversary of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) creation in 1960. This organization aims to coordinate and unify the policies on petroleum among its member nations to create fair trade and prices of oil and its derivatives; create a regular supply of petroleum to consuming countries, and provide a reasonable return on capital for petroleum-producing nations. For the first five years, its headquarters were in Geneva. On September 1, 1965, it moved to Vienna, Austria. Five countries founded OPEC: Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, and Venezuela. Qatar, Indonesia, Libya, United Arab Emirates, Algeria, Nigeria, Ecuador, Angola, and Gabon joined later. OPEC originated in Baghdad in September 1960 following changes in the international economic and political arena and the creation of newly independent states. The organization promoted a unifying vision and shared objectives. During the 1950s, the oil market was dominated by large multinational companies and the Soviet Union. OPEC changed that, focusing on the needs of the supplier nations rather than the corporations. Within a decade, the member countries achieved dominance over their domestic petroleum production and collectively impacted the price of petroleum on the world market. OPEC's collective power became apparent after the Yom Kippur War of 1973. In protest of the United States and its allies arming Israel, OPEC embargoed the nations, cutting off the supply of oil and banning the export of petroleum products. The effect was immediate. Americans and others worldwide found themselves waiting in hours-long lines to fill their gas tanks. Prices soared. The embargo lasted six months, and consumers worldwide learned a harsh lesson. Not only was the world dependent upon petrol, but OPEC was a power. The actual cost of the oil embargo continues to resonate in America. Consider the auto industry. Though not the only cause, the embargo escalated events and provided opportunities that may have required several decades to occur without it. During the fall of 1973, Americans were in shock. With petrol's scarcity and expense, the large American-made cars with massive engines and little fuel efficiency suddenly became undesirable. Though considered lower quality at the time, Japanese cars were less expensive, smaller, and fuel efficient. Brands including Datsun (Nissan), Honda, and Toyota rapidly stole market share from American manufacturers, forcing the closing of factories and the movement of supporting companies overseas. By 1980, US manufacturers were in a tailspin, and the high-paying blue-collar jobs supported by the industry were in jeopardy, sending entire regions of the nation into despair. Many of these areas never recovered. Today, Toyota is the top-selling auto brand in the United States, and Ford is number two. *** The shift in automobile markets is one example of the fallout from the 1973 oil embargo and illustrates OPEC's power in influencing current and future events. The organization continues to protect its members' interests, which is its purpose. Thankfully, it hasn't used its embargo power again.

Irish Potato Famine Begins, (IE)(1845): September 9

What would become known as the Great Irish Famine was first reported on this day, September 9, 1845, in the Dublin Evening Post. A fungus destroyed over 30% of the potato crop in Ireland in the first year, in 1845. However, this was not a one-year event. In 1846, 1848, and 1849, nearly the entire crop succumbed to disease, starving the nation of its most basic food. Over 1 million people died, and another 1.5 million emigrated to the United States, Canada, and Australia. The Great Potato Famine became one of the largest waves of immigration from a single nation in history for each destination. By the time of the US Census in 1850, 40% of all foreign-born residents in the United States were Irish. The crisis abated in 1852, mainly because so many people had died or left. Though the fungus was responsible for the initial crop destruction, politics and greed prolonged it for years. Ireland is a fertile country, and crops of barley and oats continued to grow. Livestock continued to thrive, and these products were exported for more money than they could bring locally, leaving the Irish people without food and the landowners, who were English, wealthier. The Great Potato Famine ignited the growing animosity between Ireland and England. In its wake, a determined resistance and independence movement arose, resulting in the island's division. Ultimately, the struggle spanned over a century ending with the Good Friday Agreement of 1998. Today, Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom, and the Irish Republic is a sovereign nation.

Today Hindus mark the Bhadra Pad Purnima Pratipada Shraddha. Pratipada Shraddha is a ritual for deceased family members who died on Pratipada Tithi, including Shukla and Krishna Paksha Pratipada. Teddy Bear Day: September 9

Teddy Bear Day honors the teddy bear, a plush toy in the form of a cute bear. The Teddy Bear is the invention of Morris Michtom's wife, Rose. Michtom petitioned President Theodore Roosevelt for permission to use his nickname, Teddy, for the bear. The president agreed The Michtoms, a Jewish family, immigrated to the United States in 1887 to escape religious persecution in Russia. The inspiration for the toy came from a 1902 political cartoon in the Washington Post featuring then President Theodore Roosevelt demonstrating compassion for a bear cub he was hunting. The toy was so successful that the Michtom's soon incorporated, and the Ideal Toy & Novelty Company was born. Today, most children in the United States grow up with at least one teddy bear, and Teddy remains one of the most popular toys ever produced.
