Lemonade Day is a fun, experiential program that teaches youth how to start, own and operate their business, a lemonade stand. Over the years, this event has grown international, with events now held in the United States, Canada, and South Africa. By teaching vital analytical skills, financial literacy, and decision making, children learn self-esteem, a key attribute in helping today's youth become the business leaders, social advocates, community volunteers, and forward-thinking citizens of tomorrow. Michael Holthouse founded Lemonade Day in 2007. The event date can be anytime in August, with August 20 the most common. Mosquito Day, World (1897): August 20

Mosquitos seem to really like some people, and this writer is one of them. If a mosquito is within fifty feet, I will be bit, multiple times. These little insects form the foundation of several food chains but can also be deadly. World Mosquito Day honors Dr. Ronald Ross of the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine's discovery of the malaria parasite in a mosquito on August 20, 1897. He received the Nobel Prize for his work in 1902. Currently, 350-500 million cases of Malaria occur worldwide each year, with over 1 million dying from the disease. The American Mosquito Control Association champions World Mosquito Day each year as a public service designed to educate people about the need for mosquito control and what each of us can do to minimize mosquito infestations around our homes and in our communities.

Pecan Pie Day, Ntl. Chocolate: August 20

National Chocolate Pecan Pie is the food celebration. A Thanksgiving and Christmas time table staple, pecan pie was first baked by the French in New Orleans. However, it was Native Americans who first introduced pecans to the French. Personal Story from Laura: "My first encounter with pecans occurred when I was about six. Mom and Dad had another couple over to play Bridge. It turns out they didn't have enough pecan pie for the adults and kids, so they told us kids, all four of us, that you had to be 18 years of age to eat pecan pie. We believed them, and I would be 18 the first time I tasted pecan pie. It is my favorite today, but I can't believe my parents coveted it! Or that I believed them. We still laugh about that to this day." So, enjoy your pecans this month, but please don't tell your children they can't eat pecan pie until they are adults. They might believe you!"

Radio Day, Intl. (1920): August 20

International Radio Day marks the anniversary of 8MK (WWJ) radio Detroit's first broadcast on August 20, 1920. It was what we'd call a 'beta test,' not really for public consumption. But, it was the first. The station would officially go live with the first radio newscast on August 31, 1920. At the time, creating a for-profit business in the newly emerging radio industry was a radical idea. News Radio was officially born! A few months later November 25, 1920, the first live sportscast occurred on WTAW, a college station in central Texas. August 28, 1922, saw the first paid radio commercial on New York's WEAF for apartments in Jackson Heights. However, the first public radio broadcast occurred in New York City on January 13, 1910. Though a historical anniversary, in 2013, Sabrina Roach of Brown Paper Ticket's Doer's Program made an effort to have this day marked internationally. Today, radio stations globally celebrate International Radio Day. The radio itself as an invention occurred through the efforts of multiple people. With its complex transmission and reception methods, different technologies were involved in its development, as were various inventors.

Revolution of the King and People Day, (MA)(1953): August 20

Sidi Mohammed ben Yusef, Sultan Mohammed V of Morroco, was exiled on this day in 1953 by the French colonial authorities. The Morrocan people rose in protest and took to the streets. Their protests forced the sultan to abdicate in 1955, temporarily. However, he regained the throne by negotiating with the French to vacate their colonial rule. Upon independence, King Mohammed V ruled Morroco from 1957 until he died in 1961. Revolution of the King and People Day is a national holiday.

Go Topless Day*, Intl. (1920): August 21

National Go Topless Day is a one-day celebration to support women who reserve the right to go topless in public as means to force gender equality. It falls on the Sunday before August 26. In 1920, this was the day women gained the right to vote in the US. Created in 2007 by Claude Vorilhon's Nevada-based GoTopless, women are encouraged not to wear shirts and bras, and men are encouraged to wear brassieres. Vorilhon is also the leader of the Raël, a UFO religion.

Senior Citizens Day marks the anniversary of the signing of the Social Security Act by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on August 21, 1935. President Reagan further proclaimed this day via a declaration in 1988. Another Senior Citizen’s Day is observed on May 8 as part of Older Americans Month.

Terrorism exists throughout the world. However, five countries, Afghanistan, Iraq, Nigeria, Somalia, and Syria, see the most. These five countries accounted for 75% of all deaths from terrorism in 2017. International Day of Remembrance of and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism is a United Nations initiative designed to focus resources and attention on the survivors of terrorism, assisting them with the grieving and recovery process, physically, psychologically, socially, and financially. “I ask that we all reflect on the lives that have been changed forever due to terrorism. Let us commit to showing victims that they are not alone and that the international community stands in solidarity with them, wherever they may be. Founded by Reverend Jane Howard Feldman, an Interfaith Minister, Life Coach, and Reiki Master, this occasion began in 1993. As Mother Theresa once said, "Let us not be satisfied with just giving money. Money is not enough, money can be got, but they need your hearts to love them. So, spread your love everywhere you go." Healthy Bone Action Week is an annual awareness campaign in Australia sponsored by Dairy Australia. Its purpose is to encourage positive health practices that support bone health and mitigate the risk of osteoporosis. Each day during the week, people are encouraged to: Do 20 minutes of weight-bearing exercise Get out in the sun each day Eat calcium-rich foods like milk, cheese, and yogurt. Bones are the body’s frame, and keeping them healthy is essential to leading a full life.
