Single Working Women's Day and Single Working Women's Week honor women who work, bringing home their bacon without support. Often single women face casual discrimination such as being judged on their looks, their age, and statements like: "She doesn't have a family to support; therefore, she doesn't need __________ like so and so." "She will get married, so there is no need to promote her." "She's in one of her moods today. Probably that time of the month." Discrimination includes actions like the sales team going to a strip club, playing golf when she doesn't, or using references to sports or sex that exclude or shame her in team building. Barbara Payne realized that there is no celebration to commemorate working single women. She created this day to provide support, advice, and encouragement for single women in the workplace. Fifty-one percent of women in the United States are single. Working is a challenge for anyone; however, women who work and are part of a recognized couple tend to benefit more than their single counterparts in many ways. These include lower taxes, taking advantage of bulk pricing, better restaurant seating, support after a rough day, and someone to share child-rearing. Then there are the everyday tasks like running to the dry cleaner and picking up milk after work. When you're single, you do it all. And if you lose your job, no one can help with the expenses until you get a new one. Of course, being a single working woman also has advantages (if you don't have children). You keep your paycheck. Networking is much easier if you don't have to be home after work and your time is your own. You do what you want. Everything has its perks. Still, anyone who has been a single working woman will tell you that it's demanding but rewarding. This week is a time to applaud your single female friends born without trust funds and show how much you appreciate them. Send a card, give a gift, buy a drink, or write a blog post. Mani/Pedi, anyone? Just don't forget to include yourself.

This celebration honors the bond between sisters, whether genetically linked, step, or through shared experience. It's a day to show your sister your appreciation and spend time together if possible. It may have begun as a dental promotion, or it could have been a reason to remind people about summer's happiness and carefree days. Bargain Hunting Week also rides the smile week because finding a good bargain makes one smile, and that event's sponsor chose National Smile Week's dates for that reason.

Velociraptor Attack Prevention Month is the creation of a web development company Velociraptor Aerospace Dynamics. The organization seeks to have a little fun and raise awareness of its products and services. Of course, Velociraptors no longer exist, and they’ve been extinct for tens of millions of years. Still, it’s a fun event, and it is getting noticed. We heard about it on Saudi Aramco Radio in Saudi Arabia! From the site, a little tongue, and cheek humor: “Velociraptor attack is the third leading cause of death for men age 27-29. However, everyone must consider the implications of velociraptors: young and old, men, women, and transgendered persons. The American Society for Velociraptor Attack Prevention is a bi-partisan group of professionals dedicated to the diffusion of knowledge concerning velociraptor attack prevention. The velociraptor is a bipedal carnivore with a long, stiffened tail and is distinguished from other dromaeosaurids by its long and low skull and upturned snout. It bores a relatively large, sickle-shaped claw, typical of dromaeosaurid and troodontid dinosaurs. This enlarged claw, up to 67 millimeters (2.6 in) long around its outer edge, is a predatory device used to tear into the prey, delivering a fatal blow. Velociraptors are often found on tropical islands, converted to millionaire amusement parks, but are commonly sighted in the Pacific Northwest. Of the essential facts you should know about velociraptors: a) Velociraptors hunt in packs and are known to form an equilateral triangle around their prey. b) Velociraptors have a top speed of 25 m/s on open terrain, ten m/s while wounded, and ten m/s in indoor laboratories. c) Velociraptors can open doors but are slowed by them. Protecting its quality includes keeping it free from pollution. The event champion offers the following tips for protecting our water. _____________ 1) Sweep your driveway rather than hosing it off. 2) Use a commercial car wash rather than cleaning your car at home. 3) Pick up after your dog. 4) Dispose of used motor oil properly. One quart of motor oil can contaminate more than 250,000 gallons of water. 5) Pesticides and fertilizers travel through runoff into the soil and contaminate groundwater. 6) Pick up litter on the streets to prevent it from entering storm drains and waterways. 7) Use phosphate-free cleaners. 8) Properly dispose of prescription medications. South Africa commemorates Women's Month in August as a backdrop to increased violence and brutality against women and children in our society. The month-long awareness campaign commemorates the anniversary of the 20,000-strong Women's March to the Union Buildings on August 9, 1956. The women protested against the extension of Pass Laws. The march was a turning point in the role of women in the struggle for freedom and society at large, and it drew women of all races, social classes, and economic levels.

World Wide Web Day occurs on August 1 to mark the anniversary of the creation of the World Wide Web in August 1990. The creator, Tim Berners-Lee of CERN, first proposed the concept of the World Wide Web in 1989. The first proposal for The Web appeared in MacWorld (March 1990), and the first website appeared on August 6, 1991. The founders of the Internet suggested the August 1, 1990 anniversary date. Critical dates in what we know today as the World Wide Web include: 1990: First commercial dial-up ISP 1991: First web page, content-based search, webcams introduced, and MP3 standardized. 1993: First graphic browser (Mosaic) that regular people could use; White House and United Nations go online. 1995: Netscape develops SSL encryption for financial transactions, eBay and Amazon go online; JavaScript is created and the precursor of social media, Geocities launches. 1996: Web-based email (Hotmail) launches. 1997: Netflix is created. 1998: News media breaks its first story online, rather than in traditional media (Clinton/Lewinsky Scandal); Google and Napster launch. 2001: Wikipedia launches. 2002: LinkedIn is launched. 2003: VoIP via Skype is launched, and MySpace goes live. 2004: Web 2.0 was released, allowing social media giants, including Facebook, to be created. 2005: YouTube launches. 2006: Twitter launches. 2007: iPhone is introduced, and the mobile web is created. 2008: Presidential Candidate Ron Paul uses the Internet to raise over $4.4million in a single day. Coloring Books aren't just for children. In 1970 National Coloring Book Day championed Dover Publications as a promotion. They published the first-ever coloring book for adults featuring and called "Antique Automobiles." The coloring book studies vintage cars and provides car enthusiasts with hours of relaxation and information. Dover later created books that allowed you to recreate art masterpieces, explore history, and engage in different hobbies. In 2010, they published the first 3D coloring book. National Coloring Book Day encourages children and adults to take a day off and discover the wonder of coloring.
