Proposed in 1972 by San Francisco Examiner columnist Harold Pullman Coffin, it is the day to provide Americans with one National day when they can just sit without celebrating, observing or honoring anything. In other words, it is a day when it is perfectly okay to do absolutely nothing today!

Religious Freedom Day, Ntl. (1786): January 16

National Religious Freedom Day marks the anniversary of the drafting of the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom by Thomas Jefferson on January 16, 1786. The statute was ratified three days later and became the standard for the first amendment of the US Constitution. The first amendment was approved on December 15, 1791.

John Chilembwe Day (MW)(1995): January 16

John Chilembwe was a Baptist pastor who helped lead an uprising against British colonial rule in now Malawi (Nyasaland). The uprising lasted from January 23-26, 1915. Though the revolt would fail, and Chilembwe was shot by the police and died February 3, 1915, his efforts would not be forgotten. January 16 is set aside each year as a day of remembrance of him. This is a national holiday and it was first ordained on January 16, 1995.

Bootleggers are smugglers, sometimes distillers, who bring in alcoholic beverages where they are either taxed or prohibited. National Bootlegger's Day marks two distinct anniversaries on January 17th. The birthday of bootlegger Al Capone: January 17, 1899 18th Amendment (Prohibition) goes into effect: January 17, 1920 The term 'bootlegger' refers to the flask smugglers used to hide in the top of their boots. In the age of the Old West, it was typically done to smuggle liquor to native Americans. With the advent of prohibition in the 1920s, it took on a whole new meaning.

Cable Car Day (1873): January 17

National Cable Car Day marks the anniversary of the use of the first cable cars created by Andrew Hallidie in San Francisco in 1873. Hallidie was born in England and moved in the U.S. in 1852. Once stateside he created the wire-rope suspension bridge across Sacramento's American River and applied the same technology ore cars, allowing them to be pulled from underground mines. A little more than 20 years later, Hallidie started working on his cable cars in San Francisco as a replacement for the dangerous and unreliable horse-cars in the hilly city. Today, cable cars are one of the most emblematic aspects of the west-coast city.

Jackson-Lee Day (Lee-Jackson Day): January 17

General Robert E Lee and General Thomas 'Stonewall' Jackson were confederate officers during the American Civil War representing the South. Both are Virginia natives and both were born in the month of January, the 19th and 21st respectively. In recent years there has been a noted backlash against all celebrations of the confederacy and its icons. Though once a state observed holiday in Virginia, increasingly counties and cities are bypassing it. With African Americans, particularly, the tying of this event to the National Martin Luther King holiday weekend, is insulting. Lee and Jackson were slave owners and fought to preserve slavery. Until 2000, the state celebrated all three men on the same day.
