Tater Day could be referred to as trade day, as it began in 1843 in Kentucky as a means for farmers to trade seed, roots and sweet potatoes with each other in advance of the next planting season. It later expanded to all sorts of products and services including arms, livestock and animal pelts. Today it is a full weekend event, usually held on the first weekend of April with Tater Day topping off events on the last day. Tater Day is the oldest and longest running trade day in the United States.

Tatting Day, Intl.: April 1

The first of April is National Tatting Day. Tatting is a skill, much like crochet and knitting. It falls into the same category of textile crafts and began around 1835. It is the process of creating linen or cotton lace from knots using thread and a shuttle. A shuttle is the device you see people making handmade rugs passing between the strings (as opposed to the kind of shuttle that takes you from point A to point B). During the Victorian era tatting became a way for the average woman to create a lace look. Lace at the time was very expensive. Tatting allowed people to do it on their own. By the twentieth century a variety of threads and yarns were used. Though this event does not have an official sponsor nor origin, there is an International Tatting Club that can provide information, patterns and history on the craft of tatting.

Tax Day in the United States is the deadline for American Citizens to pay and file their income taxes for the previous year. It falls on or around April 15 each year.

Tax Freedom Day (US): April 18

Tax Freedom Day is an arbitrary date calculated each year by the Tax Foundation. It marks the day each year when enough hours have been worked by the average laborer to fulfill their tax bill with the government each year, if all their earnings to this day were given to the government. From this day on, all the money earned is the workers. Depending upon the state a person lives in, this day can be earlier in the year (in states without income tax) or much later (for states like California with very high state income taxes). In 1900, tax freedom day was January 22, when total tax paid by each citizen was under 6%. Today, Americans spend more money on taxes than their housing, food and clothing combined. The official tax freedom day projection is usually released in Q1 of each year. The dates given for the current or upcoming year will always be estimates until the actual date is released.

Tea Day, Ntl. (UK): April 21

Throughout the country on National Tea Day in the United Kingdom, people hold tea parties to raise funds for charity. Participating tea houses hold special events and tastings, lessons in afternoon tea etiquette, celebrity baking classes and mixology courses. The celebration is extended a second day known as the Fes-tea-val of Tea, usually held somewhere in London.

Therapy Animal Day, Ntl.: April 30

Therapy animals are different than service animals. Service animals perform specific tasks their owners can't do due to disability such as seeing-eye dogs, or public service such as K-9 police dogs. Therapy animals fulfill a psychological function, providing comfort and companionship. Whereas a service animal is 'on the job' wherever its owner/handler goes, a therapy animal seeks out affection, cuddles and to be touched. Therapy animals can be cats, dogs, birds, rodents, anything that brings comfort to a human. Goals of National Therapy Animal Day: Recognize and honor therapy animals. Raise awareness and educate the public about the role therapy animals play in enhancing the health and well-being of humans. Honor the thousands of dedicated handlers (the human members of therapy animal teams) who volunteer their time and compassion during visits.

Tiradentes Day (BR)(1789): April 21

Joaquim José da Silva Xavier, nicknamed Tiradentes (Tooth Puller), was a dentist in the Portuguese colony of Brazil. He lead an uprising against the colonizers in 1789. He was executed on April 21, 1792 and is considered a hero in Brazil. This is a national holiday in the country. Brazil achieved its independence from Portugal in 1824. It declared its independence on September 7, 1822.

Tornado Day, Ntl. (2011): April 27

Between 8am April 27 and 8 AM April 28, 2011, 226 tornados touched down in the United States, killing 334 people. It was the most intensive outbreak of tornados ever recorded in the country. Today is a day to focus on tornado safety and prevention.
