Thirty-one Days of PKD Challenges seeks to teach the public and keep medical professionals informed about Polycystic Kidney Disease, a genetic disease, with a different activity each day of the month. As a person ages, symptoms worsen. Fluid-filled cysts form and enlarge both kidneys, often leading to kidney failure. There are two types of PKD: Autosomal Dominant PKD (ADPKD) in adults and Autosomal Recessive PKD (ARPKD) in children. This rare disease affects 1 in 20,000 people worldwide and occurs if both parents carry the gene. Most people with it will develop kidney failure before reaching age 60. Currently there is no cure and the disease does not skip generations. With greater public awareness it is hoped a cure can be found.

The first week of March is set aside to bring attention to the blood and bone marrow diseases, specifically aplastic anemia and Myelodysplastic Syndrome. Aplastic anemia, or bone marrow failure happens when the bone marrow stops making enough red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets for the body. Aplastic anemia can appear at any age, in any race or gender, it is diagnosed more often in children, young adults and the elderly. It is also more likely to strike Asian-Americans. Each year, between 600 and 900 people in the U.S. learn that they have aplastic anemia. Myelodysplastic Syndromes or MDS is a group of bone marrow disorders. People with MDS usually lack sufficient red and white blood cells as well as the clotting agent, platelets.

Asiatic Fleet Memorial Day (1822): March 1

Today is the Anniversary of the United States Navy's presence in the Far East beginning March 1, 1822. The Asiatic Fleet was formed in 1902, reestablished in 1910, and continued to serve into 1942. Through years of unrest and disturbance, the fleet protected American lives and interests along the China coast and the Yangtze River, bearing responsibilities that were as much diplomatic as Naval. The fleet also assisted civilian areas devastated by the forces of nature and by internal warfare. The Asiatic Fleet was disbanded in 1942 and replaced by the US Navy Pacific Fleet.
