Holika Dahan is a Hindu ritual that occurs on the eve of Holi after the setting of the sun. A bonfire that is prepared days ahead is lit. This is to destroy everything bad and symbolizes the victory of good over evil and the burning of the devil. People sing and dance around the fire. PLEASE NOTE: We use the Indian Civil Calendar, which is the official holiday calendar in India, the largest Hindu nation. The Hindu faith has many calendars, each specific to different regions and tribes with dates and celebrations marked by differing positions of the sun, moon and stars. Names of months and holidays, as well as the corresponding dates in the Gregorian Calendar, vary widely from one calendar to the next. Use our dates as a baseline. Hola Mohalla is the first day of the lunar month of Chet in the Nanakshahi calendar of the Sikh faith. It coincides with the Hindu festival of colors - Holi. This observance was started by Guru Gobind Singh. On this day Sikhs practice military exercises and hold mock battles.

Johnny Appleseed Day (1845): March 18*

Johnny Appleseed Day, one of two in the calendar, celebrates businessman, conservationist and philanthropist John Chapman's efforts to spread apple seeds throughout America in the 18th century. He sold apple seedlings for seven cents each. He would barter apple seeds in exchange for lodging, old clothing and shoes. If a family could not afford to purchase a seedling, he would gift it. This day marks the anniversary of his death, March 18, 1845. His obituary appeared in the Fort Wayne Sentinel on March 22. Planting trees on their land aided settlers in attaining government recognition for their land claims. Appleseed was well respected by both settlers and Native Americans. He spoke several languages, protected the environment and was familiar with the various medicinal uses of plants. The second Johnny Appleseed Day is in September and marks the anniversary of John Chapman's birth on September 26, 1774.
