Relief of Leiden Day (NL)(1574): October 3

Between 1572 and 1574, the Dutch and Spanish fought a war. On October 3, 1574, under the leadership of William of Orange, the Spanish army was chased from the city of Leiden, which had been under siege for a year. Over 18,000 people died of starvation or plague during the siege. The removal of Spanish troops ended the war. This is a national holiday.

The Madonna del Lume Celebration, (US-CA): October 3

Blessing the fishing fleet prior to the new season to insure a good catch and safety for the fishermen, is a tradition dating back centuries to Porticello, Italy. The Madonna del Lume (Mother of the Light) is the patron saint of fisherman, thus the name of the celebration. In San Francisco, California, the event is hosted by the Church of Saints Peter and Paul and involves a mass, parade and of course, the blessing. The Madonna del Lume Celebration, Blessing of the Fishing Fleet, is a tradition started in San Francisco in 1935.

Virus Appreciation Day: October 3

There are two possibilities for this day: Biological and Technological. Biological: Virus Appreciation Day was created to commemorate the Cowpox virus, which when administered as a vaccination, prevented people from contracting Small Pox. In essence one virus prevents another virus from living, replacing a deadly virus with one that is simply inconvenient. Small Pox is a deadly disease that until Edward Jenner tested his theory in 1796 by infecting an 8 year old boy with live cowpox virus, awaiting his recovery over 10 days, then infecting him with small pox. The boy did not get sick. Small Pox was declared eradicated on May 3, 1980 by the United Nations. Over centuries it was responsible for millions of deaths world wide. Why this day was chosen instead of the anniversary of the first successful inoculation (May 14, 1796) or Jenner's birthday (May 17, 1749) or day of death (January 26, 1823), is unknown. We cannot source if this is the anniversary of the publishing of his findings either. ______________ Technological: Virus Appreciation Day was created to educate people about protecting themselves from computer viruses. Anyone with a computer for any length of time will have come across virus, Trojans and malware at some point or another. These destructive codes can be spread via attachments, networks, emails, phishing sites and any number of creative technological appeals, including ransomware. Once contracted, these malicious codes can completely destroy years of work, hijack personal information and make your life a living hell. The first ever computer virus was Creeper, released in 1971 by Bob Thomas at BBN Technologies (Raytheon). This worm infected ARPANET and altered what was shown on the screen.
