Mahalaya is performed on this day and the final countdown of Durga puja starts from Maha Saptami. Devotees offer flowers and prayers and also keep fast on the day of Maha Saptami. In the evening, a grand arti is performed to goddess Durga in Pandals and at home. USS Cole (YE)(2000): October 12

October 12, 2000 the USS Cole, a Navy guided-missile destroyer (DDG-67) was hit by an Al Qaida terrorist attack, while harbored and refueling in Aden, Yemen. Seventeen America sailors were killed in the attack and thirty-nine were left injured. The USS Cole bombing was the deadliest strike against a United States Naval vessel in more than two decades. Later, US Intelligence would link the attack of the USS Cole to the events of September 11, 2001.

Bone and Joint Action week is supported by the Global Alliance for Musculoskeletal Health. This event was previously known as the Bone and Joint Decade. Upon the conclusion of the decade, it became an annual weekly observance surrounding the following annual days: World Arthritis Day on October 12 World Spine Day on October 16 World Trauma Day on October 17 World Pediatric Bone & Joint Day on October 19 World Osteoporosis Day on October 20 U.S. patient and healthcare professional organizations, medical schools, government agencies, health systems providers and industry, have come together as part of the United States Bone and Joint Initiative (USBJI) to improve prevention of bone and joint disorders, and the quality of life for those affected. Movement is an issue for nearly one in two Americans over the age of 18, and for many children. Musculoskeletal disorders include arthritis, back pain, fracture, osteoporosis, sports trauma, and other ailments affecting function and mobility. The goal of this week is to increase awareness and provide solid information for the public, whilst supporting research.

Emergency Nurses Day: October 13

Since 1989, the Emergency Nurses Association has recognized the second Wednesday in October as Emergency Nurses Day, a day honoring emergency nurses for their commitment to patient care. In 2001, ENA expanded the celebration to devote an entire week to honoring emergency nurses, because one day is simply not enough to recognize all contributions made by emergency nurses. During a year when the Zika virus, opioids and heroin, and the mental health crisis made national headlines, emergency nurses compassionately connected with and cared for their community of patients and coworkers. This week is about honoring these frontline workers in the healthcare field.

Finns are known for their dislike and aversion to failure; but, with the Great Recession heavily impacting the Scandinavian country, many of its people found themselves in an unfavorable state: dependent upon a social welfare system and unable to find a job. This was never meant to be! For this reason, the very first Failure Day was celebrated across Finland in 2010. Its purpose is to encourage young entrepreneurs to take risks and not be afraid to fail. National Failure Day was started by the Aalto Entrepreneurship Society (non-profit targeting young businessmen) and Boardman Tulenkantajat (an organization of entrepreneurs). It quickly gained the support of the Finnish government, media, and celebrities including the creator of Angry Birds and the Chairmen of Nokia and Shell. The movement spread across the country with lightning speed and was celebrated on the streets, in cafes, university campuses, and the likes. Each year events expand throughout the nation, often featuring speeches by prominent entrepreneurs who share their failure stories that formed the stepping stones of their success.
