Pet Cancer Awareness Month, Ntl.: November*

National Pet Cancer Awareness Month sponsored by the Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company was first marked in 2005; the month long awareness campaign focuses on pet cancer, its causes, and its devastating aftermath. A high percentage of pet owners don't know how to effectively care for their pets to help them avoid cancer. Some are well-intentioned, like vegan and vegetarian owners who choose to feed their cats with carrots or legumes. Others believe treating their furry friends with anything from chocolate to too many treats. November, leading into the indulgent holiday season, is the month set aside to educate pet parents on how best to take care of our pets from diet and exercise to domicile and environment. This is one of two Pet Cancer Awareness Months, each with different sponsors.

Prematurity Awareness Month is sponsored by the March of Dimes and addresses the issues leading to premature birth and its prevention. The campaign begins each year kicks off with the announcement of the Premature Birth Report Card. Throughout the country health care providers offer prenatal services and screenings. Premature is considered any birth prior to 37 weeks.

Prime Meridian Day (1884): November 1

Prime Meridian Day marks the creation of modern time zones and longitude measurements at the International Meridian Conference in Washington DC in October 1884. November 1 is when the new measurements went into affect. The prime meridian resulted in the creation of the Greenwich Meridian marking zero degrees longitude. A prime meridian was necessary because of two things: for navigation and to unify timetables to create the 24 longitude based time zones of the world. The earth travels turns on its access at 15 degrees per hour. Each time zone in the world covers 15 degrees, counting forward from the Greenwich Meridian off the coast of Britain in the Atlantic. The International Date Line, which is different and located in the Pacific, affords for three additional time zones. This is why some countries are at :30 minute rather than :60 minute increments.

Rama Ekadashi in the Hindu religion is celebrated in the month of Kartik during the waning phase of the moon (Krishna Paksha). Fasting on Rama Ekadashi is believed to wash away all the sins committed. PLEASE NOTE: We use the Indian Civil Calendar, which is the official holiday calendar in India, the largest Hindu nation.
