It provides livelihoods to 32 million growers, nearly half of whom are women, and benefits over 100 million families across 80 countries on five continents. Each piece of cotton clothing represents a personal story tracing back through its trade chain.

Cotton plays a crucial role in developing and least-developed economies, acting as a safety net. It is a significant source of income and employment for many rural smallholders and laborers, including women, particularly in some of the world's poorest rural areas. The United Nations recognizes these aspects of the cotton industry on World Cotton Day, celebrated annually on October 7th. This day was initiated in 2019 by the Cotton Four - Benin, Burkina Faso, Chad, and Mali, four cotton-producing countries in sub-Saharan Africa.

An Infection Preventionist (IP) is a healthcare professional who works to prevent and control the spread of infections in healthcare settings such as hospitals, clinics, and long-term care facilities. Their role is crucial because infections, including those resistant to antibiotics, can spread quickly in these settings, causing serious illness or even death.

Here are some of the critical duties of an Infection Preventionist:

Surveillance: IPs regularly monitor and analyze infection data from various hospital departments to identify trends and outbreaks. They might use sophisticated software to help with this.

Education: IPs provide training and education to healthcare staff on infection prevention and control best practices. They may also be responsible for educating patients and their families.

Policy Development and Implementation: IPs often develop and implement infection control policies and procedures. They must ensure that these policies comply with local, state, and federal regulations and guidelines from organizations like the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO).

Outbreak Management: If an infection outbreak occurs, IPs take the lead in managing it, including identifying the source, implementing control measures, and evaluating their effectiveness.

Consultation: IPs work with other healthcare professionals on preventing and controlling infections related to anything from a specific patient case to the design of a new healthcare facility.

Collaboration: IPs often collaborate with other professionals such as microbiologists, epidemiologists, public health officials, and hospital administrators. They might also be part of an interdisciplinary Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) committee.

Infection Preventionists typically have a background in nursing, medical technology, microbiology, or public health. They also usually have specialized certification in infection control, such as the Certification Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology (CBIC) certification. Their role is critical in healthcare settings to protect patients and staff from infectious diseases.

This event runs October 8-12 each year and includes World Octopus Day, World Nautilus Night, World Squittleday, World Kraken Day, and World Fossil Day.

Chicago Marathon, Bank of America (US-IL): October 8

The Chicago Marathon is one of several major yearly marathons in the United States and worldwide. In November 1976, at the Metropolitan YMCA on LaSalle St., five key founders of what would eventually become the Bank of America Chicago Marathon met to begin discussions and planning.

Those present included,
Wayne Goeldner, physical education director of the Hyde Park YMCA;
Wendell "Wendy" Miller, a partner in a financial advising firm and founder of Midwest Masters Running Club;
Bill Robinson, Executive Director of Friends of Parks;
Sharon Meir, Director of Women's Sports at the Loop Center YMCA;
and Dr. Noel Nequin, Director of Cardiac Rehabilitation at the Swedish Covenant Hospital.

At this meeting, the group decided it was time for a marathon in Chicago. The first race occurred in 1977.

Clergy Appreciation Day: October 8

Clergy Appreciation Day falls on the second Sunday of October during Clergy Appreciation Month. This event began as Pastor Appreciation Day, founded by Jerry Frear of Under His Wings. It later became Clergy Appreciation Month, a month open to faith leaders (Rabbis, Monks, Imams, Priests) of all faiths.

Frear started the original Pastor Appreciation Day based on a survey he and his staff conducted in 1992 that found that many clergy were unhappy in their jobs. The day celebrates everything faith leaders do to minister to their flocks and support the local community. Over a few years, it became clear that an entire month was needed and that clergy of other faiths should also be recognized. The focus on appreciating clergy seems to be working.

When asked today, most faith leaders are devoted to their work and strongly desire to work with their communities. Clergy Appreciation Month is about saying thank you to the shepherds of faith and learning more about what they do daily.
