Earth Science Week is an international week to educate the public about earth sciences, conservation, and available careers. Learning resources and activities engage young people in exploring the relationship between the arts and the Earth systems. Topics include geoscience principles and issues as diverse as energy, climate change, the environment, natural disasters, technology, industry, agriculture, recreation, and the economy. Each year a different theme is highlighted. See the website for teaching tool kits and other resources. This event first ran in 1998 and reaches over 50 million people worldwide each year.

Emergency Nurses Week: October 8-14

Since 1989, the Emergency Nurses Association has recognized the second Wednesday in October as Emergency Nurses Day, a day honoring emergency nurses for their commitment to patient care. In 2001, ENA expanded the celebration to devote an entire week to honoring emergency nurses because one day is not enough to recognize all contributions made by emergency nurses. During a year when the Zika virus, opioids and heroin, and the mental health crisis made national headlines, emergency nurses compassionately connected with and cared for their community of patients and coworkers. This week is about honoring these frontline workers in the healthcare field.

Fire Prevention Week, Ntl. (1871): October 8-14

National Fire Protection Week encourages people to learn how to prevent and protect against fires. The week marks the anniversary of two killer fires, The Great Chicago Fire and The Peshtigo Fire. Both fires began on the same day in the same year, along with three other major fires in the region.

The Great Chicago Fire of October 8-10, 1871, killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures, and burned more than 2,000 acres. October 9 represents the deadliest of the three days.

The most devastating fire in American history remains Wisconsin's Peshtigo Fire, October 8, 1871. The fire only burned for one day but killed 1,200 - 2,400 people and charred over 1.2 million acres. Rain, after months of drought, put it out.

The largest fire in the world included forests in two countries, Russia and China. The 1987 Black Dragon Fire scorched 2.5 million acres and is the deadliest forest fire in history in the People's Republic of China. One hundred ninety-one died by fire, 250 were injured, and 33,000 Chinese became homeless. For context, the second largest fire to date in the US, the 2021 Dixie Fire in California, burned 463,000 acres and killed one; the largest, Alaska's 2004 Taylor Complex Fire, killed 15 and burned 1.3 million acres.

CAUSES OF FIRES
According to the National Park Service (NPS), 85% of wildland fires and 94% of those threatening homes and businesses in the United States begin due to human activity. These activities include:

Unattended campfires
Burning debris
Equipment use and malfunctions
Discarded cigarettes
Intentional acts of arson

Home fires are caused predominantly by these activities:

Cooking Portable heaters
Electrical fires from bad wiring
Careless smoking
Unattended candles
Chemicals
Christmas trees

HISTORY OF NATIONAL FIRE PREVENTION WEEK
In 1920, President Woodrow Wilson issued the first National Fire Prevention Day Proclamation, and since 1922, Fire Prevention Week has been observed on Sunday through Saturday, including October 8. According to the National Archives and Records Administration's Library Information Center, Fire Prevention Week is the record's longest-running public health and safety observance. The President of the United States has signed a proclamation proclaiming a national observance during that week every year since 1925.

World Octopus Day celebrates the versatile and intelligent creature known as the octopus. A Cephalopod family member, the octopus, is thus named because they have eight arms. But they also have three hearts and have existed for over 300 million years. The second week of October is National Pet Peeve Week. It's a week for men and women to take a deep breath and finally release the pet peeve they've been holding onto. Pet peeves accomplish nothing, and healthy relationships are bigger than that. Don't sweat the small stuff! What are some of the top pet peeves?

1. When people copy your idea and take credit for it.
2. People acting like they're hurt or sad to get attention (Playing the victim).
3. Rudeness and lack of ettiquette.
4. Messy/unflushed shared toilets.
5. Interrupting.
6. Talking over other people.
7. Invasion of personal space (this is an American thing—we need our 1-meter buffer).
8. Lack of respect for others' opinions.
9. Stopping in the middle of a crowded path, hallway or street.
10. Not covering mouth when coughing or sneezing.
11. Leaving grocery carts loose in the parking lot.
12. Not replacing the toilet paper.
13. Using a speaker on a cell phone in a public space.
14. Playing music or games without headphones in a public space.
15. Squeezing the toothpaste from the middle.
16. Driving slow in the left-hand lane (or right in Commonwealth countries).
17. Leaving 1/4 cup of coffee in the pot and not making another pot.
