International Migratory Bird Day takes place on the second Saturday in May in the US and Canada and in October in Mexico, Central and South America, and the Caribbean each year.

Why Celebrate Migratory Birds?

Public awareness and concern are crucial components of migratory bird conservation. Citizens who are enthusiastic about birds, informed about threats, and empowered to become involved in addressing those threats can tremendously contribute to maintaining healthy bird populations. By modeling what can be done and involving people, their interest and involvement in stewardship can grow.

One of the most successful vehicles for public education on migratory birds is International Migratory Bird Day(IMBD). Penguin (African) Awareness Day: October 14

African Penguin Awareness Day raises awareness about the beautiful and endangered African penguins and informs the public on what we can do to help. Overfishing and pollution have endangered these birds. SANCCOB and other environmental groups host this event each year. Supporting it can be as simple as adopting a baby penguin chick from their website. If in Capetown, check out the Penguin Festival, which occurs this month.

Sarvapitru Amavasya (H): October 14

Sarva Pitru Amavasya (Pitru Paksha / Pitr paksha / Pitri paksha) is a day set aside to perform the ritual known as Shraddha (tarpan) or the death rite of ancestors in Hinduism.

Hindus believe the souls of the three preceding generations reside in Pitru–Loka, a realm between heaven and earth. The performance of Shraddha by a son during Pitru Paksha ensures that the souls of ancestors enter heaven. Implementing this ritual can also mitigate an error in which this tribute failed to be performed on the deceased's death anniversary.

Solar Eclipse (Annular): October 14

An annular solar eclipse is a type of solar eclipse that occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and the Earth but is at a point in its orbit where it appears smaller than the Sun, so it does not completely cover the Sun. As a result, during an annular solar eclipse, a thin ring of sunlight, known as the "ring of fire," is visible around the edges of the Moon.

Annular solar eclipses are similar to total solar eclipses in that they both involve the Moon passing in front of the Sun. However, the difference is that during a total solar eclipse, the Moon is at a point in its orbit where it appears larger than the Sun, so it completely blocks out the Sun, whereas, during an annular solar eclipse, the Moon appears smaller than the Sun and does not completely block out its light. Annular solar eclipses are still fascinating to observe, and people often travel to the eclipse path to witness the event. However, they are not as dramatic as total solar eclipses since the ring of fire around the Moon is not as visually impressive as the total darkness of a total solar eclipse.

Annular solar eclipses occur more frequently than total solar eclipses but are still relatively rare.

Promoted by Hey U.G.L.Y. (Unique, Gifted, Lovable, You), the National Bullying Bystanders Unite Week seeks to encourage the 85% of people who witness bullying but do nothing to pledge not to let bullying thrive.

Whether it’s school bullying, street bullying, or cyberbullying, being bullied is always a traumatic experience for the bullied and many people around them.

Bullying is often problematic for the bullies themselves as it’s an extremely unhealthy way of expressing or suppressing emotions.

The vast majority of bullies are tormented people (Bullies can also be animals or nations) who feel helpless in some area of their lives and choose to bully to regain control. Rather than ‘pick on someone their own size’ who could fight back or make things difficult, bullies seek to exploit vulnerabilities and use everything they can to look superior to others.

This month is about saying ‘no!’ to bullying and educating people on the resources available to help the bullied and bullies change their life.

The federal government, state governors, mayors, and others issue Character Counts Week proclamations yearly. These help raise awareness and draw attention to local celebrations and character-building success stories. The following is from the 2016 Presidential declaration. "The task of shaping America's course falls to each of us as individuals who make up our American family, and as we celebrate National Character Counts Week, let us seek to live out the ideals that have inspired our country's journey that define our national character. No matter who you are, what you look like, where you come from, or your circumstances, America should be where the things that make you unique and different call for celebration. That promise of equality and acceptance has been our country's North Star since its founding. Thinking of how that centuries-old ideal translates into our lives today comes down to all of us showing others the compassion and acceptance that we would only wish for ourselves. Daylight Savings (BR), Begins: October 15

Daylight Savings in Brazil’s Southern states commences on the 3rd Sunday in October (Spring Forward) and ends on the 3rd Sunday in February (Fall Back). On this day, we move the clock one hour ahead at 2 AM in October or one hour back in February at 2 AM on Sunday.

The saying, “spring forward, fall back,” is an excellent way to remember. The memory tool works in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. American Benjamin Franklin was the first to propose daylight savings time (DST) in 1784. Modern DST began in 1895.

Several variations were adopted throughout history, ranging from 30 minutes to two hours. Not everyone observes DST, which can make setting appointments very challenging. The primary purpose of DST is to make better use of daylight hours for farming, early morning activities (such as children walking to school in the light instead of dark), and saving energy.

The closer one lives to the North and South Pole, the longer the period of daylight in the summer months.
