Sankashti Chaturthi (H): September 12

06:20 AM | -
In the Hindu faith, Chaturthi celebrates Lord Ganesha. Sankashti Chaturthi (Sankata Chaturthi) is observed on the fourth day of Krishna Paksha (dark lunar phase or the waning phase of the moon). If this Chaturthi falls on a Tuesday, it is called Angarki Sankashti Chaturthi. Devotees observe strict fasting during daylight until darshan (the sight of the moon). Prayers to Lord Ganesha precede the breaking of the fast. PLEASE NOTE: We use the Indian civil calendar, the official holiday calendar in India. The Hindu faith has many calendars, each specific to different regions and tribes, with dates and celebrations marked by differing positions of the sun, moon, and stars. Names of months and holidays and the corresponding dates in the Gregorian Calendar may vary widely from one calendar to the next. Determine the proper calendar before attending local events.

Sarvapitru Amavasya (H): September 11

06:20 AM | -
Sarva Pitru Amavasya (Pitru Paksha / Pitr paksha / Pitri paksha) is a day set aside to perform the ritual known as Shraddha (tarpan) or the death rite of ancestors in Hinduism. Hindus believe the souls of the three preceding generations reside in Pitru–Loka, a realm between heaven and earth. The performance of Shraddha by a son during Pitru Paksha ensures that the souls of ancestors enter heaven. Implementation of this ritual can also mitigate an error in which this tribute failed to be performed on the deceased's death anniversary.

Schwenkfelder Thanksgiving (1734): September 24

06:20 AM | -
The Schwenkfelders are a Christian offshoot of Lutheranism, which originated with Casper Schwenckfeld (1489-1561) of Silesia (Southern Germany). His followers would eventually settle in the Perkiomen Valley of southeastern Pennsylvania. Like the Puritans of England, they immigrated to the American colonies to escape religious persecution. They arrived in the United States from the city of Harpersdorf (Poland) between 1731 and 1737. The most significant wave came on September 22, 1734, and they celebrated their first Day of Remembrance on September 24, 1734. The Schwenkfelder Thanksgiving is the oldest known thanksgiving celebration in the United States. President Lincoln declared the national holiday, Thanksgiving, on the fourth Thursday of November in 1863 to unite the nation during the American Civil War.

Science, Technology and Innovation, Southern Intl. Day For: September 16

06:20 AM | -
SUPPORTING INNOVATION IN THE GLOBAL SOUTH: INTERNATIONAL DAY OF SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATION IN THE SOUTH The International Day of Science, Technology, and Innovation for the South, observed annually on November 10, aims to promote the importance of science, technology, and innovation (STI) in developing the Global South. The day highlights the critical role that STI plays in addressing the unique challenges faced by countries in the Southern Hemisphere, fostering sustainable development, and improving the quality of life. It also encourages collaboration and knowledge sharing among nations to bridge the STI gap between the Global North and South. WHAT ARE SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATION? Science Science is the systematic study of the structure and behavior of the physical and natural world through observation and experiment. It encompasses disciplines such as physics, chemistry, biology, and earth sciences, aiming to understand fundamental principles and discover new knowledge. Technology Technology refers to applying scientific knowledge for practical purposes, especially in industry. It involves creating, using, and improving tools, machines, techniques, and systems to solve problems and achieve specific goals. Innovation Innovation translates ideas or inventions into goods and services that create value or meet new requirements. It involves the development of new or improved products, processes, or technologies that enhance efficiency, effectiveness, or quality. Challenges in the Southern Hemisphere ISSUES HAMPERING INNOVATION Limited Resources and Infrastructure Countries in the Southern Hemisphere often need more financial resources and inadequate infrastructure. These constraints hinder the development and implementation of advanced STI initiatives. Brain Drain Many talented scientists, engineers, and innovators from the Global South migrate to the Global North for better opportunities, leading to a brain drain that further exacerbates the STI gap. Education and Training Access to quality education and specialized training in STI fields is often limited in the Global South. This disparity affects the development of a skilled workforce capable of driving innovation and technological advancement. Funding and Investment STI projects in the Global South need more funding and investment than those in the Global North. This lack of financial support limits research and development activities, innovation, and technological progress. EVENT HISTORY The International Day of Science, Technology, and Innovation for the South was established by the United Nations to recognize STI's pivotal role in the sustainable development of the Global South. The date, November 10, was chosen to commemorate the establishment of the UNESCO General Conference, which has historically focused on promoting international collaboration in science and technology. HOW TO PARTICIPATE Awareness Campaigns Various organizations and institutions have launched awareness campaigns to highlight the importance of STI for developing the Global South. These campaigns include educational materials, social media posts, and public service announcements that emphasize the benefits and potential of STI in addressing local and global challenges. Educational Programs Schools, universities, and research institutions organize lectures, seminars, and workshops to educate students and the public about the latest developments in STIs and their impact on society. These programs aim to inspire young minds to pursue careers in STI fields and contribute to developing their countries. Collaborative Projects International collaborations and partnerships are encouraged to share knowledge, resources, and expertise. Joint research projects, technology transfer initiatives, and innovation networks are established to foster cooperation and build capacity in the Global South. Community Engagement Local communities participate in events such as science fairs, exhibitions, and innovation challenges that showcase local talent and promote grassroots innovation. These events provide aspiring scientists and innovators a platform to present their ideas and solutions to real-world problems. Policy Advocacy Advocacy groups and stakeholders engage in dialogues with policymakers to address the barriers to STI development in the Global South. These discussions focus on creating supportive policies, increasing funding, and improving infrastructure to enhance STI capacity. The International Day of Science, Technology, and Innovation for the South catalyzes promoting the essential role of STI in the sustainable development of the Global South. By fostering awareness, encouraging collaboration, and addressing the challenges faced by countries in the Southern Hemisphere, the day contributes to bridging the STI gap and ensuring that all nations can benefit from advancements in science, technology, and innovation.

Scottish Food and Drink Fortnight (UK): September

06:20 AM | -
Scottish Food & Drink Fortnight (a fortnight = two weeks) is a month long event and is hosted by Scotland Food and Drink and promoted by the Scottish Government. This nationwide event features locally grown Scottish products and those who grow, make, cook, and sell them. Here are five dishes that are native to Scotland: Haggis is a savory pudding containing sheep's pluck (heart, liver, and lungs), minced with onion, oatmeal, suet, spices, and salt, traditionally encased in the animal's stomach and boiled before being uncased and served. Self-University Week: September 1-7

06:20 AM | -
BECOME AN AUTODIDACT: SELF-UNIVERSITY WEEK Created in 1989, Self-University Week seeks to awaken the autodidact in each of us. Whether you've made it through high school or achieved a Ph.D., you've probably figured out that education starts after you graduate. People constantly learn, which is as necessary for our health as our quality of life. The first seven days of September each year remind people to learn something new and embrace the unexpected. Are you looking for ideas? —Visit your library and find a new topic to discover. —Play the Devil's advocate. Think of a topic for which you are passionate. Some hot-button issues include immigration, abortion, guns, Israel, the death penalty, climate sciences, etc. Now spend the week learning about the other side and their arguments. —Choose a country you've never visited but would like to. Research it and create an action plan to get there one day. —Spend the week at different restaurants representing different cultures (nobody said eating isn't part of learning). You can also do this with beers and wines and explore the world's tastes or music. Choose something new and different to learn. This week's idea is to expand your knowledge, challenge conventions, and improve your understanding. Have fun with it!

Semana de La Lactancia Latina: September 5-11

06:20 AM | -
SEMANA DE LA LACTANCIA LATINA: APOYANDO A LAS MADRES LATINAS (English translation below.) _______________ ENGLISH VERSION SEMANA DE LA LACANCIA LATINA: SUPPORTING LATINA MOTHERS Semana de La Lactancia Latina occurs in conjunction with World Breastfeeding Month and Workplace Lactation Week, which are aimed at promoting and supporting breastfeeding within the Latina community in the United States. The United States Breastfeeding Committee (USBC), in collaboration with various health and cultural organizations, champions the event. The five-day awareness campaign seeks to raise awareness about the benefits of breastfeeding and to address the unique challenges faced by Latina mothers. WHY NURSING IS IMPORTANT Breastfeeding is not just important; it's essential for infants' and mothers' health and well-being. Health organizations, including the American Academy of Pediatrics and the World Health Organization, recommend exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of a child's life. Breastfeeding provides vital nutrients and antibodies that protect infants from infections and chronic diseases. For mothers, it aids in postpartum recovery and reduces the risk of certain cancers and other health issues. This positive impact on health is a reason for hope and optimism. Semana de La Lactancia Latina aims to empower Latina mothers by providing education, resources, and support to encourage breastfeeding. The initiative highlights the cultural significance of breastfeeding and seeks to create a supportive community environment that respects and promotes this practice. It also advocates for policy changes to ensure that Latina mothers have the necessary support to breastfeed successfully. Your role in creating and maintaining this supportive community environment is crucial. LATINA WOMEN FACE EXTRA CHALLENGES Latina women often encounter specific challenges when trying to breastfeed. Cultural barriers, language differences, and a lack of targeted support can hinder their breastfeeding journey. Additionally, Latina mothers may face economic and social pressures that make it challenging to prioritize breastfeeding. Access to breastfeeding resources and support services can also be limited in some communities. Many companies are working to accommodate nursing mothers by implementing supportive measures such as providing dedicated lactation rooms, flexible break times, and access to lactation consultants. These efforts are crucial in helping mothers balance their work responsibilities with their desire to breastfeed. Despite these advancements, Latina mothers still face obstacles in the workplace. Common issues include a lack of private, hygienic spaces to pump milk, insufficient break times, and a lack of understanding or support from colleagues and supervisors. These challenges can make it difficult for Latina mothers to continue breastfeeding after returning to work. Semana de La Lactancia Latina seeks to address these barriers by advocating for more robust workplace policies and providing employers with best practices to support nursing mothers. The event emphasizes the importance of creating a breastfeeding-friendly environment and offers resources to help Latina mothers navigate the challenges they may encounter. CONCLUSION By promoting these initiatives, Semana de La Lactancia Latina underscores the importance of breastfeeding and the collective effort needed to support Latina mothers. It reminds us that breastfeeding can be a positive and empowering experience for Latina families with the proper support and resources, and it's our collective responsibility to ensure this support is in place.
