Star Trek Day (1966): September 8

At 8:30 PM, on September 8, 1966, a new type of science fiction television show premiered in the United States. Star Trek would have a three-year run and be considered mildly successful. The series was first pitched to CBS, which passed, given their series "Lost in Space" was already in production. NBC picked up the series after commissioning a second pilot, believing the first too high-minded. Its original audience consisted primarily of the affluent and well-educated: scientists, doctors, professors, lawyers, and wealthy people, setting it apart from other shows and allowing it to achieve three seasons, despite its less than stellar ratings. In Star Trek's case, it wasn't the number of viewers but their quality (advertising value) that kept the show going. A massive letter-writing campaign didn't hurt either. The original series had 79 episodes. Where Star Trek shined was in re-runs throughout the 1970s. In 1979, "Star Trek, The Motion Picture" premiered, riding the wave of space blockbusters, including 1977's "Star Wars" and "Close Encounters of the Third Kind." In 1987, the first live-action scripted spinoff, "Star Trek The Next Generation," premiered. The Star Trek franchise exploded with at least 13 different television series and 13 feature-length films. The franchise isn't shy about taking on social and political issues, making it one of the most influential television series globally. Everyone who knows the show has a favorite episode. At LEEP, ours is "The Trouble with Tribbles," episode 15, season 2. It premiered on December 29, 1967. Happy Star Trek Day! Sri Krishna Janmashtami is the birthdate of Lord Krishna. The dates of his life correspond to July 21, 3227 BC - February 18, 3102 BC). Sri Krishna Janmashtami is celebrated on the eighth day (Ashtami) of the Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) during the month of Bhado in the Hindu calendar. Devotees fast from morning to midnight and decorate temples and homes with idols of Lord Krishna on swings and in cradles. For Hindu children, Krishna's birthday is a much anticipated holiday akin to Christmas in Christian cultures. PLEASE NOTE: We use the Indian civil calendar, the official holiday calendar in India. William McKinley Assassination (1901): September 6

The 25th President of the United States, William McKinley, was just six months into his second term as President of the United States when he was assassinated on September 6, 1901, by Leon Czolgosz, an American citizen of Polish decent. The President died eight days later. McKinley was neither the first nor last American President to be assassinated in office. Abraham Lincoln was the first, killed in 1865, and James A. Garfield was the second in 1881, having been in office for four months. John F Kennedy was the last in 1963. McKinley was the last President to have served in the American Civil War (1860-1865). After his assassination, the US Congress mandated the Secret Service be used to protect the President of the United States from all threats, foreign and domestic. Its original purpose was to investigate counterfeiting after the Civil War, and it evolved into the US's first intelligence and counter-intelligence agency. Later it was split into several law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, DEA, ATF, CIA, and IRS-CI. The Secret Service's mission continues to include protecting the financial and trade infrastructure of the United States as well as providing protection for its leaders.
