National Journalist's Day is an annual observance in Afghanistan that honors the contributions of journalists to the country's media landscape. In Afghanistan, journalists have played a vital role in promoting freedom of expression and the free flow of information. Despite the numerous challenges journalists face in the country, they have continued to report on important issues such as human rights abuses, corruption, and the ongoing conflict. National Journalist's Day is an opportunity to recognize journalists' significant work in Afghanistan and highlight the need for press freedom and the protection of journalists' rights. The day includes various events, including seminars, workshops, and award ceremonies, which aim to celebrate the achievements of Afghan journalists and encourage further growth in the country's media sector. Since the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan in 2021, over 50% of journalists have lost their jobs, and several have been killed, including 19 injured and the murders of Sajjad Mosawi and Akmal Nazari at an awards presentation on March 11, 2023, by a bomb detonated by ISIL in Mazar-e-sharif.

Key Deer Awareness Day (1967): March 11

Key deer are a sub-species of the North American white tale deer and native to the southernmost Florida Keys. The miniature deer average 25-35 inches (64 - 89 centimeters) high at the shoulder, making them roughly the same size as a Labrador Retriever. Key deer landed on the endangered species list on March 11, 1967, when only a few dozen remained. Today they are protected and swim from island to island, with the majority living in the national refuge. Key Deer Day is an awareness campaign that focuses on education and protecting the habitat of this fun size deer.

March 11 is the anniversary of the Madrid Train Bombings. There were three major terrorist attacks in the first five years of the twenty-first century that forever changed Western civilization, civil safety, and privacy rights: September 11, 2001, attacks on New York and Washington DC; the July 7, 2005, London bombings; and today's anniversary, the March 11, 2004, Madrid commuter train bombings. In Spain, ten bombs exploded on four commuter trains almost simultaneously, killing 191 people and injuring more than 1,800 during the morning rush hour. It was and continues to be the deadliest terrorist attack in Spain's history.

Moshoeshoe's Day has to be one of the most delightful events linguistically. Simply saying Chief Moshoeshoe's name brings a smile to the face. Born in 1776, Chief Moshoeshoe became the first king of the African nation of Lesotho, uniting the Basotho people. He was known for his generosity toward defeated enemies. Upon his death on March 11, 1870, colonialism became a reality for his people. Today he is celebrated for his diplomacy and as the nation's first king.

Pandemic Day might go down in history as one of its eeriest coincidences. On March 11, 1918, the first cases of the Spanish Flu were reported in the United States when 107 soldiers at Fort Riley, Kansas, were diagnosed. The Spanish Flu would claim the lives of 500,000 US citizens and 22 million people worldwide. Fast forward to March 11, 2020, when the novel Coronavirus, named COVID-19, was declared a global pandemic by the World Health Organization. As of this writing (June 2021), the world is still amid this pandemic. Over 614,000 Americans have died, and globally, nearly 4,000,000. However, the global number is considered a vast underestimate, with experts estimating that the number is closer to 20 million. Nations, including India, Brazil, Syria, Yemen, Palestinian Territories, and others, lack the medical infrastructure, testing, and reporting mechanisms to track infections and deaths, particularly in rural communities, accurately.
