Thirty-one Days of PKD Challenges seeks to teach the public and keep medical professionals informed about Polycystic Kidney Disease, a genetic disease, with a different activity each day of the month. As a person ages, symptoms worsen. Fluid-filled cysts form and enlarge both kidneys, often leading to kidney failure. There are two types of PKD: Autosomal Dominant PKD (ADPKD) in adults and Autosomal Recessive PKD (ARPKD) in children. This rare disease affects one in 20,000 people worldwide and occurs if both parents carry the gene. Most people with it will develop kidney failure before reaching age 60. Currently, there is no cure, and the disease does not skip generations.

AIDS, Zero Discrimination Day: March 1

Discrimination forms through misinformation or fear of the unknown. By reflecting on people in everyday situations, on Zero Discrimination Day, UNAIDS challenges people to recognize where discrimination occurs and stop it. No one should ever be discriminated against because of their HIV status, age, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, race, ethnicity, language, geographical location, migrant status, or for any other reason. Unfortunately, discrimination continues to undermine efforts to achieve a more just and equitable world. People face discrimination daily based on who they are or what they do. Discrimination will only disappear by actively addressing the ignorance, practices, and beliefs that fuel it. Zero Discrimination Day has been observed every year since 2014.

Alport Syndrome Awareness Month: March

National Alport Syndrome Awareness Month first ran in 2013 and seeks to raise awareness of the hereditary syndrome affecting kidneys, sight, and hearing called Alport. The condition is named after the doctor who defined it in 1927, A. Cecil Alport. The awareness month seeks to educate people on the need for organ donations and continue to raise funds for research.

The first week of March brings attention to blood and bone marrow diseases, specifically aplastic anemia and myelodysplastic syndrome. Aplastic anemia or bone marrow failure happens when the bone marrow stops making enough red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets for the body. Aplastic anemia can appear at any age, race, or gender; it is diagnosed more often in children, young adults, and the elderly. It is also more likely to strike Asian Americans. Each year, 600 and 900 people in the US learn that they have aplastic anemia.

Asiatic Fleet Memorial Day (1822): March 1

Today is the anniversary of the United States Navy's presence in the Far East, beginning March 1, 1822. The Asiatic Fleet was formed in 1902, reestablished in 1910, and continued serving until 1942. Through years of unrest and disturbance, the fleet protected American lives and interests along the China coast and the Yangtze River, bearing responsibilities in diplomacy and defense. The fleet also assisted civilian areas devastated by the forces of nature and by internal warfare. The Asiatic Fleet was disbanded in 1942 and replaced by the US Navy Pacific Fleet.

Beer Day in Iceland marks the anniversary of the end of 75 years of prohibition regarding beer on the island nation, March 1, 1989. Other alcohol was available after 1921, but beer was tied to the colonial past when Denmark ruled Iceland. Therefore, when the ban finally ended in 1989, 44 years after Iceland's independence from Denmark, beer became the national drink. A brain injury can happen anytime, anywhere, to anyone, and brain injuries do not discriminate. Over 2.4 million Americans sustain a brain injury each year. This month focuses on providing early detection, equal access to health care, and educating the public on best practices in preventing brain injuries. Canada observes its Brain Injury Awareness Month in June.
