National Horse Protection Day was founded in 2005 by pet lifestyle expert, animal behaviorist, and advocate Colleen Paige. Growing up, Colleen spent much of her summertime with horses, where she learned dressage, show jumping, horse husbandry, trail riding in the desert and mountains, and caring for foster horses, Chico and King. The lessons she learned from the horses in her life impacted the woman she is today. National Horse Protection Day brings light to the plight of horses in America and beyond while helping the thousands of unwanted horses in this country find forever homes.

Over hundreds of years, Irish men, women, and children left the homes of their ancestors, watching the coasts of Donegal and the cliffs of Dingle fade behind them. Boarding overcrowded ships and navigating dangerous seas, these resilient travelers looked to the horizon with hope. Many left their valuables, land, and stability behind, seeking the true treasures of their homeland through songs, literature, humor, traditions, faith, and family. These include Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone, Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holiday, and Dinah Washington. Celebrate this month by taking some vinyl for a spin. Juvenile Arthritis Awareness Month (CA): March

Juvenile Arthritis Awareness Month occurs in March in Canada and July in the United States. In Canada, approximately 61,500 children live with arthritis. Juvenile idiopathic arthritis is the most common rheumatic disease in childhood, and it is characterized by persistent inflammation in the joints that causes pain, stiffness, and swelling. Physical activity is essential for children with arthritis. These children can develop weak muscles and low bone strength because of their condition and because they tend to be less physically active than children who don't have arthritis. The Linking Exercise, Activity, and Pathophysiology in Childhood Arthritis Canadian Collaborative Team (LEAP) studies the link between physical activity and juvenile idiopathic arthritis. The work of the LEAP team will provide information and help develop safe and effective exercise programs to keep children with arthritis healthy and improve their quality of life. Juvenile Arthritis Awareness Month is about supporting research and helping kids with arthritis be kids!

Kidney Health Month, Ntl. (CA/US): March

National Kidney Health Month occurs in March in the United States and Canada. In addition to a month-long awareness campaign, World Kidney Day occurs in the middle of March, and the United Kingdom devotes a whole week to Kidney health in May. The purpose of this month is to educate the public about Kidney Disease, what causes it, and what you can due to minimize your chances of getting it. WHAT IS KIDNEY DISEASE? Chronic kidney disease is defined as having some type of kidney abnormality or marker, such as protein in the urine, and having decreased kidney function for three months or longer. There are many causes of chronic kidney disease. The kidneys may be affected by diabetes and high blood pressure, and some kidney conditions are inherited (run in families). Others are congenital; individuals may be born with an abnormality that can affect their kidneys. The following are some of the most common types and causes of kidney damage. Diabetes is a disease in which your body does not make enough insulin or cannot correctly use it, resulting in a high blood sugar level, which can cause problems in many parts of your body. Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney disease. High blood pressure (also known as hypertension) is another common cause of kidney disease and other complications such as heart attacks and strokes. High blood pressure occurs when the force of blood against your artery walls increases. Glomerulonephritis is a disease that causes inflammation of the kidney's tiny filtering units called the glomeruli. Glomerulonephritis may happen suddenly, for example, after strep throat, and the individual may get well again. However, the disease may develop slowly over several years, and it may cause progressive loss of kidney function. Polycystic kidney disease is the most common inherited kidney disease. It is characterized by the formation of kidney cysts that enlarge over time and may cause severe kidney damage and even kidney failure. Other inherited diseases that affect the kidneys include Alport's Syndrome, primary hyperoxaluria, and cystinuria. Kidney stones are prevalent; they may cause severe pain in your back and side when they pass. There are many possible causes of kidney stones, including an inherited disorder that causes too much calcium to be absorbed from foods and urinary tract infections or obstructions. Medications and diet can help to prevent recurrent stone formation. In cases where stones are too large to pass, treatments may be done to remove them or break them down into small pieces that can pass out of the body. Urinary tract infections occur when germs enter the urinary tract and cause symptoms such as pain or burning during urination and a more frequent need to urinate. These infections most often affect the bladder, but they sometimes spread to the kidneys and may cause fever and pain in your back. Congenital diseases may also affect the kidneys. These usually involve problems in the urinary tract when a baby is developing in its mother's womb. One of the most common occurs when a valve-like mechanism between the bladder and ureter (urine tube) fails to work correctly and allows urine to back up (reflux) to the kidneys, causing infections and possible kidney damage. Drugs and toxins can also cause kidney problems. Using large numbers of over-the-counter pain relievers for a long time may harm the kidneys. Certain medications, toxins, pesticides, and street drugs, such as heroin and crack, can also cause kidney damage.

Liver Disease Month, Help Fight (CA): March

National Help Fight Liver Disease Month in Canada aims to promote liver health and reduce the incidence and impact of all liver diseases. The most common contributors to Liver disease are: Viral hepatitis Caused by viruses that attack the liver, viral hepatitis comes in many forms. The most common conditions are hepatitis A, B, and C. Although a vaccine can prevent hepatitis A and B, there is no vaccine for hepatitis C. In Canada, hepatitis C is the leading cause of liver transplants. Obesity The leading cause of liver disease in Canada is a fatty liver disease linked to obesity. Alcohol Factors such as gender, age, nationality, weight, and health can affect how a person's liver metabolizes alcohol. When the liver has too much alcohol to handle, normal liver function may be interrupted, leading to a chemical imbalance. Suppose the liver is required to detoxify alcohol continuously. In that case, liver cells may be destroyed or altered, resulting in fat deposits (fatty liver) and, more seriously, either inflammation (alcoholic hepatitis) or permanent scarring (cirrhosis). Liver cancer can also result from alcohol-induced liver disease. Canadian health standards for alcohol consumption are: Ten drinks a week for women with no more than two drinks a day. Fifteen drinks a week for men, with no more than three drinks daily. Use this month-long event to evaluate your habits and take steps to minimize your risk of contracting liver disease. The US version of this month occurs in October each year.

March for Babies is an annual fundraising drive by the March of Dimes, supporting pediatric research and finding cures for various diseases and afflictions affecting babies before and after birth. Each year 15 million babies are born prematurely. March of Dimes helps moms have full-term pregnancies and healthy babies. If something goes wrong, they offer information and comfort to families.

Mars (god) Month: March

Mars Month celebrates the month's namesake, the Roman god of war, Mars. In early Roman history, he was a god of spring, growth in nature, fertility, and the protector of cattle. Mars is a chthonic god (earth god), which could explain why he became a god of death and war. He is the son of Jupiter and Juno and the father of Romulus and Remus by the Vestal Ilia (Rhea Silvia). Because he was the father of these legendary founders of Rome and thus of the Roman people, the Romans styled themselves 'sons of Mars.'
