Sandwich Day (1718): November 3

Sandwich Day honors one of the oldest methods of serving food, the sandwich.

The first recorded sandwich was made by Hillel the Elder, a rabbi who lived in the first century BC. He chopped nuts, apples, spices, and wine, placing the paste between two matzoh flatbreads. His is the first known version of this popular meal. This dish, the Hillel sandwich, is still served during Passover.

The term "sandwich" was first recorded in 1762 by the English author Edward Gibbons. The cooks at London's Beef Steak Club, a gaming club, invented the bread-flanked sandwich we know today. The word sandwich is the namesake of Lord John Montagu, the fourth Earl of Sandwich (1718-1792). An avid gambler, he took his meals at the card table. Whenever he was hungry, his servants would bring him cold cuts placed between two slices of bread. Soon after, his gambling mates also ordered "the same as Sandwich."

Lord Montagu was born before the switch from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar. This day, November 3, corresponds to his birthday in the Julian calendar of November 13, 1718.

She received the moniker as the Director of Community Relations and Training for her employer, one of the largest chicken restaurant chains in the world. She created the Professional Speakers Network, Inc., a non-profit that has helped thousands of people become excellent public speakers. Her graduates set aside this day to thank her each year.

If you grew up in the 1960s or later, one of the must-have toys was an Easy-Bake Oven. Still made today and as popular as ever, this little oven using light bulbs to heat unique recipe creations allows children to cook cakes and other treats in their rooms. Today is National Easy-Bake Oven Day, honoring its release on November 4, 1963. This event was created by Todd Coopee of Toy Tales and author of "Light Bulb Baking: A History of the Easy-Bake Oven."

What do you do with that leftover jack-o-lantern from Halloween?

Well, the folks at Rock Ranch in The Rock, Georgia, have come up with a local answer that could be easily deployed by other ranches nationwide: National Pumpkin Destruction Day. People bring their wilting jack-o-lanterns to the ranch (or use the pumpkin drop-off). Then, on the first Saturday of November, the fun begins!

How many ways can you smash a pumpkin? Rock Ranch explores them all, from dropping them from planes and cranes to running over them with monster trucks and shooting them from cannons. They're used as bowling balls, darts, and fun. Every pumpkin sacrificed is then turned into compost and organic fertilizer, avoiding a useless death in a garbage dump. The cycle of life continues, and the attendees are entertained!

Sadie Hawkins Day: November 4

Sadie Hawkins Day commemorates the holiday in Li’l Abner, an Al Capp comic strip. The event honors the Sadie Hawkins dance, where girls ask boys.

On this day, girls ask boys out to a dance or date. In the comic strip Li’l Abner, Sadie Hawkins was the daughter of Hekzebiah Hawkins, one of the earliest settlers of Dogpatch. She was perpetually waiting for a suitor. When she was 35 and still unmarried, her father called all the available men in the town to join the foot race, with marriage to Sadie as the prize for the winner. However, Sadie had her eyes on Adam Olis.

Unfortunately, Olis is already courting Theresa Richmond, the daughter of Dogpatch's most prominent potato farmer. Because it was such a good idea, the spinsters of the town decided to make Sadi Hawkins Day a yearly event on the first Saturday of November, when the original ran in the comic strip.
