William Penn Adair Rogers was an American writer, actor, and humorist who first came to fame on the Vaudeville circuits. Later he became a well-known character actor in the early years of film. Rogers died in 1935 in a plane crash. Today is the anniversary of his birth on November 4, 1879.

Ahoi Ashtami (H): November 5

Ahoi Ashtami traditionally occurs mid-fall in October or November, a mother-son observance in the Hindu faith. Mothers of sons awaken before dawn, place pristine water into a mud container called a kora karawa, and pray to the goddess Ahoi. The women then fast (vrat) for the entire day. Mothers believe fasting coupled with prayers endows their male children with good luck. At nightfall, the mother’s fast is broken with fruit. She continues to pray, offering pure water from the kora karawa to the stars in the sky and offering sweets to a wall painted with the image of the goddess.

Animal Shelter Appreciation Week, Intl.: November 5-11

International Animal Shelter Appreciation Week is initiated by The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and observed in many nations through the Humane Society International. This awareness campaign honors animal shelters and the dedicated people who work in them worldwide.

During this event, people are encouraged to support their local animal shelter by becoming educated about their services, volunteering, or donating supplies. Additionally, this week seeks to educate people about the threats confronting animals, including puppy mills, dog fighting, abuse, and search and rescue during natural and manmade disasters. The International Humane Society helps all animals, from mice and rabbits to horses, cattle, and eagles. This week, learn about what they do in your country and support or volunteer if possible.

FEMA chose this day as the logical opportunity for people to remember to check the batteries in their smoke and CO2 detectors and emergency radios, flashlights, and other powered items for emergencies.

Civil Disobedience, Guy Fawkes Day (UK)(1605): November 5

November 5 in the United Kingdom is known as Civil Disobedience Day (Guy Fawkes Night, Guy Fawkes Day, Bonfire Night, or Firework Night). On this day in 1605, a group of English Catholics, led by Guy Fawkes, attempted to assassinate the Protestant King James I of England and replace him with a Catholic monarch.

After the failed attempt, Fawkes was caught guarding a cache of explosives placed beneath the House of Lords in London, and he was attempting to blow up the entire building. Every year since, November 5 is remembered and marked as a symbol of civil disobedience. The 'Guy Fawkes Mask' is one of the more endearing symbols of rebellion, and the most recent sighting was in the 2006 film "V for Vendetta."

Daylight Savings in Fiji & Tonga commences on the 1st Sunday of November (Spring Forward) and ends on the 3rd Sunday of January (Fall Back).

On this day we move the clock one hour ahead at 2AM in November or one hour back in January at 2AM on Sunday.

The saying, "spring forward, fall back," is an excellent way to remember. The memory tool works in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.

American Benjamin Franklin was the first to propose daylight savings time (DST) in 1784. Modern DST began in 1895. Throughout history, several variations were adopted, ranging from 30 minutes to two hours.

Not everyone observes DST, which can make setting appointments very challenging. The primary purpose of DST is to make better use of daylight hours for farming, early morning activities (such as children walking to school in the light instead of dark), and saving energy.
