Created in 2017, World Calligraphy Day is a promotional, fundraising, and educational initiative of The Pen Museum and Manuscript Pen Company in Birmingham, United Kingdom. Calligraphy is the ornate style of writing seen every day in Arabic and Asian cultures. In the Western world, calligraphy graces formal invitations and degree certificates. It takes years of practice to perfect, and it is admired for its beauty and artistry.

National Creamsicle Day provides an excuse to eat your favorite flavor of Creamsicle. 11-year-old Frank Epperson (inventor of the popsicle) created the Creamsicle in 1905 of vanilla ice cream dipped in fruit juice, then frozen on a stick. Today this fruity-creamy frozen blend has lent its name to everything from cocktails to cakes. However, the Creamsicle continues to be one of the world’s favorite, low-calorie (under 100) treats!

Football, AFL Founded (1959): August 14

Today is the anniversary of the first American Football League (AFL) meeting in 1959. In 1969, it merged with the National Football League (NFL). Merger conditions included a championship game between the two leagues and in-common drafts. The championship game would eventually lead to one of the most popular events in the United States, the Super Bowl. The National Football League was founded on August 20, 1920.

On August 15, 1947, the British Parliament declared India and Pakistan independent nations no longer under colonial rule. Both countries fought hard to gain independence with the non-violent movement led by Mahatma Gandhi. The local time of this event was August 14. Pakistan observes its Independence Day on the 14th and India on the 15th. Britain partitioned the territory into two nations: Hindu (India) and Muslim (Pakistan).

Lizard Day, World: August 14

Lizards are members of the reptile family with more than 6,000 species worldwide. The largest is the Komodo Dragon. Except for bearded lizards and Gila monsters, these essential creatures to the ecosystem are not poisonous. Lizards tend to eat insects, which makes them quite valuable for gardens. World Lizard Day does not appear to have an origin; however, it is marked and celebrated internationally by zoos and other wildlife enthusiast groups.

Before this, many states had the legal drinking age at 18. According to the organization, the change in legal age saves over 1,000 lives each year.

7-7 London Bombing (2005): July 7

Three years into the 'War on Terror,' the United Kingdom experienced its day of horror on July 7, 2005. Today is the anniversary of that event known as 7/7. It was a beautiful day in central London when four suicide bombers, in coordinated attacks using public transportation, killed 52 people and injured over 770 during the morning rush hour. Three bombs detonated in London's subway system, two outside Liverpool Street and Edgware Road stations. The third exploded between King's Cross and Russell Square in London. 9-9-9 Emergency Number Established (1937): July 1

July 1, 1937, saw the world's first emergency telephone number deployed in London, covering a 12-mile radius from Oxford Circus. It would be another 31 years before the US would implement a similar system, 911, and even longer for other nations. For example, in Saudi Arabia, the emergency number is 110. The idea of 999 was first suggested in 1935 after five women died during a fire in Wimpole Street in London. Callers using 0 to dial the police were unable to get through as the switchboard was jammed. By the time people got through, it was too late. The first calls came in on July 2, and the system fielded 1336 calls in its first week.

Adhik Masam (H): July 18 - August 16

Adhik Maas, also known as Purushottam Maas, Mal Maas, or Malimmacha, is an additional month in the Hindu lunar calendar that occurs approximately every 32.5 months. The Hindu calendar is lunar, with each month lasting about 29.5 days. However, the solar year is about 365.25 days long, which creates a discrepancy between the lunar and solar calendars. Adhik Maas synchronizes the calendars, which is added every 2.5-3 years. Adhik Maas is considered a highly auspicious time for religious and spiritual practices. Many devotees use this time to engage in fasting, prayers, meditation, and charity, and rewards for these activities deliver exponentially during Adhik Maas. Various religious rituals, including pujas and yagnas, are also performed during this time. Hindus believe Lord Vishnu presides over Adhik Maas. Devotees often perform special pujas and visit temples dedicated to Lord Vishnu to seek his blessings. Auspicious activities, such as weddings and house-warming ceremonies, are generally avoided during Adhik Maas, a time for self-improvement, spiritual growth, and reflection, rather than material pursuits.

Air Conditioning Appreciation Days: July 3-August 15

Think of how life would be without air conditioning. It is a scary thought! The Romans were the first to attempt air conditioning, using fans held by slaves, water via aqueducts, and designing buildings with breezeways. The Persian and Arab worlds further perfected the use of architecture to create breezes. Electricity would finally make air conditioning possible, first with a fan and then via Willis Carrier's 1902 invention, a water-cooled, coiled air conditioner. Like many inventions, he didn't realize what he had for over a decade. His purpose was to reduce humidity in his print shop, and it did that, but he soon realized it could do much more. In 1922, he created the first room chiller debuting over Memorial Day weekend in 1925 with the first artificially cooled commercial venue, the Rivoli Theater in Times Square. Suddenly, places considered virtually unlivable, like the desert Southwest, areas of the Middle East, Africa, South America, and Australia, were suddenly attractive. Air conditioning made it possible, but it would take a while. In the 1960s, only 10% of homes had air conditioning in the United States. By 2007, 86% would have it. Cities including Phoenix, Dubai, Riyadh, and Sydney would not be the powerhouses they are today without air conditioning. Air conditioning changed demographics throughout the world. As the dog days of summer set in, please take this opportunity to be thankful for that cool breeze that allows us to work, sleep and make the most out of the hot (and often humid) summer months.
