The Windrush Generation first arrived in Britain from the Caribbean on June 22, 1948, and would continue to migrate through 1971. Though invited, many were detained, denied health care and housing benefits, or deported. This event was first declared in 2018 after a public scandal hit the front pages earlier in the year. Arthur Torrington, director of The Windrush Foundation, stated upon the date's announcement, "It will cement in the national consciousness the important contribution of those who traveled from the Caribbean to Britain 70 years ago to build a better life and participate in making Britain a stronger nation."

Alan Turing was born on June 23, 1912, to Julius Mathison Turing and Ethel Sara in Paddington, England. During the Second World War, he worked for the Government Code and Cypher School (GC&CS), the center for breaking codes in the UK. He cracked the encryption codes required for the German Enigma machine, allowing the Allies to gain momentum in their war campaigns. After the war, he designed ACE ( Automatic Computing Engine), one of the first computers.

Flamingo Day, Pink (1957): June 23

Pink Flamingo Day honors the 1957 pink flamingo lawn décor creator Don Featherstone. It occurs on the day after his death in 2015. This event was declared a holiday by the former mayor of Leominster, Massachusetts, Dean Mazzaralla. Its champion is the Lawn Greeting Association. Lawn greetings, also known as a ‘yard card,’ are a prank played on loved ones and friends. A popular version of a yard card is installing a flock of plastic pink flamingos overnight. The prankster hires a company that arrives after dark and fills the recipient’s lawn with various critters, including flamingos, dinosaurs, cows, and more. The pranked wakes up in the morning to a laugh. People do this instead of sending flowers or cards for special events. History of the Plastic Pink Flamingo: Don Featherstone hails from a small town in Massachusetts called Leominster. Hired by a plastic molding company called Union Products, Don created clay molds of animals for plastic lawn ornaments. These critters included cows, roosters, pigs, and more. After studying a National Geographic magazine, Featherstone created what would become an American icon: the plastic pink flamingo. For almost 50 years, Union Products manufactured these pink birds. Several other companies tried to reproduce their versions of pink flamingos in different shapes and shades of pink. Sadly, due to increasing production costs, Union Products ceased all production and closed its doors for good. Many flamingo fans feared the pink flamingo lawn ornament would become extinct. Created in 2017, National Eat at a Food Truck Day celebrates the thousands of entrepreneurs that feed America with food trucks featuring gourmet, street food, and ethnic cuisine. The first food trucks in America were carts and date back to New York City (New Amsterdam) in 1691. Over the years, they developed along with technology and social trends. Chuck Wagons became commonplace to feed mobile workforces like cattlemen in the 1860s. Entrepreneurs outfitted covered wagons with everything you'd find in a diner, making diners portable in the 1870s. During WWI, the US Army used them to feed troops in the field. Oscar Mayer's Weiner Mobile is the most iconic food wagon, which debuted in 1936. The first food truck most people encounter is the ice cream truck. These first appeared in the 1950s. Taco trucks emerged in 1974 in Los Angeles as an extension of a bar's kitchen. The 1980s saw the creation of hamburger and sandwich trucks, which gained popularity on college campuses. By the 2000s, food trucks went multi-cultural. Today you can find just about any style of food on food trucks, with Asian, Middle Eastern, and Juice Bars becoming some of the most sought-after.
