LGBTQ Equality Day marks several Supreme Court ruling anniversaries. June 26, 2003: Lawrence v. Texas States can no longer criminalize the private conduct in which same-sex couples engage. June 26, 2013: United States v. Windsor Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) is unconstitutional. The Federal Government may longer restrict married same-sex couples from receiving Federal benefits and protections. June 26, 2015: Obergefell v. Hodges Same-sex couples have a constitutional right to marry, and States can no longer discriminate against same-sex couples when recognizing or licensing a marriage.

Pied Piper Day (1284): June 26

On Pied Piper Day, people celebrate the story of the Pied Piper of Hamelin, or (Rattenfänger von Hameln in German). The legend is based on a possibly true story. During the 13th and 14th centuries, bubonic plague haunted Europe, and its source was rats. As a rat-Catcher in Hamelin, his services would have been in great demand. The word 'pied' means multi-colored clothing, and this particular rat-catcher is said to have lured rats from their hiding places with music from his pipe, a simple wind instrument that looks like a flute. Of course, if people refused to pay him, he then used the music from his magical pipe to lure the town's children away. It is believed 130 children disappeared on this day in 1284 AD. The city of Hameln is visited by thousands of people daily during the summer months, with the Pied Piper being the reason. In 2013 the city officially requested UNESCO recognize the city and its Pied Piper as an "intangible cultural heritage." The legend endures in one form or another in the writings of Johan Wolfgang von Goethe, the Brothers Grimm, Robert Browning, Terry Pratchett, and others.

National Tire Safety Week is a USTMA initiative to rally the tire industry in a focused effort to help drivers learn simple yet essential steps to maintain their tires. USTMA is the national trade association for tire manufacturers. “Technology and sophisticated engineering are the heart and soul of tires,” said Anne Forristall Luke, USTMA president, and CEO. “Tire manufacturers go to great lengths to produce tires for long-lasting, safe performance. And that commitment to quality extends beyond the factory. Tire manufacturers want to be a resource to consumers to help them understand the importance of regular maintenance to safety and how best to take care of their tires.” Tire manufacturers, retailers, and others nationwide work to educate motorists about proper tire care and maintenance. Participating retail outlets join the nationwide effort to promote tire care through advertising, promotions, free tire pressure checks, and community and media outreach. This event can occur at the end of May or early June, with the actual date posted 45-60 days before.
