Muffin Day raises awareness about hunger and homelessness. Originally, Muffin Day was another superfluous food holiday created on the internet without sponsors, purpose, or reason. Enter attorney Jacob Kaufman, the "muffin man of San Francisco." Kaufman regularly distributed fresh muffins to the city's homeless on his way to work each morning. In 2015 he saw a chance to take a useless day, Muffin Day, and make it mean something. Reaching out to his colleague, Julia Levy of Atlanta, the two created a community-focused initiative centering on muffins in their cities. Volunteers, or muffineers, purchase muffins to raise money for homelessness and then give these muffins to the homeless to address hunger—two objectives accomplished with one muffin? Now that is an impressive quick bread! Kaufman's muffineering inspired others worldwide to do the same in their cities. The event moved from its fixed date of February 20 to a weekend nearest that date, thus allowing muffineers to take part in "spreading the muffin" over weekends globally. Bun Day in Iceland is tied to the Christian observance of Lent and occurs on Shrove Monday before Ash Wednesday, February 22, 2023. Children wake up in the morning and get their parents out of bed. Over the previous few days, the children prepared paper or cardboard paddles (usually), which they decorated. Icelandic legend says that each spank of the paddle delivered to parents earns a cream-filled bun. Chasing parents with paddles in a reversal of roles is sweet fun!

It's National Chip Week in the United Kingdom. Each country is known for at least one signature food; for the United Kingdom, it's Fish & Chips. An island country, England has always survived and thrived by the sea. In the 19th century, trawl fishing in the North Sea made haddock and cod affordable to the working classes. From this plentiful catch, fish and chips were born. Potatoes were first brought to England during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I and quickly caught on. The spuds grew well in English and Irish soil and complemented the diet, being inexpensive and filling. Chips made English style (called steak fries or Jojos in the United States) became a staple and favorite food. The first shop selling Fish and Chips was opened in 1860 by young entrepreneur Joseph Malin in London.

Daisy Gatson Bates Day, Ntl.: February 20

Daisy Lee Gatson Bates Day honors publisher and civil rights activist Daisy Lee Gatson Bates during Black History Month. Bates was born on November 11, 1914, in Huttig, Arkansas; She and her husband, Luscious Christopher “LC” Bates, founded the Arkansas State Press in 1941, a weekly African-American newspaper promoting awareness of social injustice and championing civil rights. In 1952 she became the president of the Arkansas State Conference of NAACP Branches and later helped the Little Rock Nine integrate public schools. She devoted her life to civil rights and anti-poverty initiatives. In 1990, then Arkansas Governor Bill Clinton recognized Daisy Bates as the “most distinguished Arkansas citizen of all time” and decreed Daisy Lee Gatson Bates Day on the third Monday of February. In 2014, in honor of the 100th anniversary of her birth, the US Congress made Daisy Lee Gatson Bates Day a national event. Daisy Bates died on November 4, 1999, at age 85.

Exploding Hammer Festival (MX-GT): February 20

The Exploding Hammer Festival, also known as the Festival of San Juan de la Vega, is a tradition in San Juan de la Vega, Guanajuato, Mexico. It is part of the carnival season leading up to the 40-day fast of Lent, two days before Ash Wednesday. Saint John, was a Mexican version of Robinhood in the 17th century and was "sainted" by the townspeople. He is the town's patron and the event's marquee, but Judas, the betrayer of Jesus, gets the attention. For the primary exhibition, participants dressed in brightly colored costumes and masks represent Judas and carry sledgehammers into the village square. In teams, each strikes a greased pole, [el palo encebado], to create the spark that ignites the oil leading to the top where fireworks are attached. The team that manages to ignite the fireworks is declared the festival winner. On a smaller scale, men and boys attach fireworks and small explosives to the face of sledgehammers and smash them throughout the streets. The festival is believed to have originated during the pre-Hispanic as a spring equinox celebration. Like many local customs, it was incorporated into the Catholic calendar as a festival to celebrate a saint.
