Delicious, sweet, buttery, and nutty, sticky buns have been a favorite breakfast sweet (or mid-afternoon sugar rush) for centuries. Sticky buns originated in North Africa and Greece and worked their way through Europe as the Romans expanded their empire. These sweet breads didn’t hit major popularity until around 1688 when the Germans and Dutch, fleeing war in their regions, immigrated to the United States, many settling in Philadelphia. Today if you get a chance to visit the Reading (Pronounced Red-ing) Terminal in downtown Philadelphia, you’ll find an Amish Bakery and several others that continue to make the sticky buns the way they’ve been made for centuries. For the Love of Mike Day: February 22

We have yet to learn why Wellcat created this holiday. But we can at least explore the phrase 'For the Love of Mike.' In the 1880s, rather than profaning God's name in moments of incredulity or exasperation, people would say either "For Pete's Sake!" or "For the Love of Mike!". It was one way to avoid blemishing the 4th Commandment, "Thou shall not take thy Lord's name in vain." There is a lost film, originally called 'Hell's Kitchen' and later retitled 'For the Love of Mike' from 1927. The film was directed by Frank Capra (It's a Wonderful Life) and featured Claudette Colbert in her debut, with Ben Lyon playing Mike. There is no copy known copy of the film left. It is a romantic drama involving gambling and trying to throw a rowing competition, plus a Three Men and a Baby scenario as three single men raise Mike.

Founding Day (SA)(1727): February 22

Founding Day in Saudi Arabia marks the anniversary of Imam Muhammad bin Saud assuming power in Diriyah on February 22, 1727, creating the first city-state on the Arabian Peninsula and ushering in the House of Saud dynasty. Attempts to unite all the tribes of the region into a cohesive nation would occur several times until, on September 23, 1932, King Abdulaziz bin Abdul Rahman Al Faisal Al Saud succeeded, creating what is today Saudi Arabia. Oil would be discovered in Dhahran in 1938. The holiday acknowledges the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s deep historical culture and civilizational and its initial achievement at unity, stability, and prosperity. Founding Day originated with a Royal Decree in 2022 and is a national holiday.

The purpose of Lent is to prepare for the fulfillment of God’s promise to Abram and the new covenant created with mankind through Jesus Christ. It is a season observed by all Christians, though more stringently in the Catholic and Orthodox faiths. Traditionally there is prayer, penance, and atonement leading up to the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is customary to fast during Lent. Fasting can be food or giving up something else of pleasure, such as drinking or smoking, and other temptations like sweets or meat.

Which woman named Margarita is responsible for the Margarita (tequila, triple sec, and lime) is debated. What is known is the drink is Mexican and was created sometime in the late 1930s or early 1940s, depending upon which story you believe. It is named after a woman, and its main ingredient is tequila. There are three varieties of Tequila: Gold Tequila, Tequila Anejo, and White Tequila. Gold and Anejo are aged in oak, like wine. Most tequila is produced in Mexico. It is made from the Blue Agave (century) plant and must contain 51 percent of Blue Agave under Mexican law to be considered tequila. Pink Shirt Day to End Bullying (CA): February 22

Bullying is a significant problem in Canadian schools, workplaces, homes, and over the Internet. The event takes place on the last Wednesday of February. The idea of wearing pink shirts to end bullying started with two teenagers in Nova Scotia, David Shepherd, and Travis Price. The two 17-year old's witnessed a 14-year-old student beaten for wearing a pink shirt. The boys were incensed and went to the local discount store and purchased 50 pink tank tops, which they then passed out to their fellow students. Pink Shirt Day started a movement that gained momentum. Throughout Canada, wearing pink shirts in solidarity with bullying victims raises awareness of the issue.

Washington's Birthday (1732): February 22

On February 22, 1732, General George Washington, the leader of the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War and the first President of the United States, was born. He led an illustrious career. The words of his farewell address remain relevant in America today, particularly his warnings about showing favored nation status to allies and the dangers of imperialism. "The West derives from the East supplies requisite to its growth and comfort, and what is perhaps of still greater consequence, it must of necessity owe the secure enjoyment of indispensable outlets for its own productions to the weight, influence, and the future maritime strength of the Atlantic side of the Union, directed by an indissoluble community of interest as one nation. Any other tenure by which the West can hold this essential advantage, whether derived from its own separate strength or from an apostate and unnatural connection with any foreign power, must be intrinsically precarious. While, then, every part of our country thus feels an immediate and particular interest in union, all the parts combined can not fail to find in the united mass of means and efforts greater strength, greater resource, proportionally greater security from external danger, a less frequent interruption of their peace by foreign nations, and what is of inestimable value, they must derive from union an exemption from those broils and wars between themselves which so frequently afflict neighboring countries not tied together by the same governments, which their own rivalships alone would be sufficient to produce, but which opposite foreign alliances, attachments, and intrigues would stimulate and embitter. Hence, likewise, they will avoid the necessity of those overgrown military establishments which, under any form of government, are inauspicious to liberty, and which are to be regarded as particularly hostile to republican liberty.
