Take Your Child to the Library Day is a Connecticut-based, grass-roots project created by Nadine Lipman. Lipman is the retired Head of Children's Services at the Waterford (CT) Public Library. This event began in 2012. Take Your Child to the Library (without 'Day') is now a featured product line and promotion from Upstart. Television Safety Day, National: February 4

Television Safety Day is a joint promotion of Safe Kids Worldwide and The Consumer Electronics Association. It focuses on removing hazards from your home that are a danger to children. Approximately 17 children die each year in the United States (and many more are injured) from heavy televisions tipping over and falling on them. Television Safety Day teaches how to secure televisions in the house and also where to recycle older televisions. Families with flat-panel televisions should mount these to the wall to reduce the risk of TV tip-overs. If you have a CRT TV, place it on a low, stable piece of furniture. When it is no longer in use, recycle it.

USO Day, (1941): February 4

USO Day marks the anniversary of the founding of the United Services Organization in the months before the United States entered WWII. For many servicemen, especially those on active duty, the USO is a bright spot in an otherwise bleak and scary war. Many of America's greatest entertainers have performed for the USO. USO HISTORY from their site: Supporting America's troops was the first mission of the USO. In 1941, as it became clear that the nation was heading into World War II, several organizations mobilized to support the growing U.S. military: the Salvation Army, Young Men's Christian Association, Young Women's Christian Association, National Catholic Community Services, National Travelers Aid Association and the National Jewish Welfare Board. President Franklin D. Roosevelt created synergy among these agencies by forming the United Service Organizations to provide the emotional support the troops needed. Over time, the USO has evolved, developing new programs and services to meet the ever-changing needs of the troops and their families while holding fast to the original mission. Today, the USO continues to lift the spirits of America's troops and their families and will continue to be there for them until everyone comes home.

It provides an opportunity for burn, fire, and life safety educators to unite in elevating awareness of the causes and best practices in preventing burns from fire, chemicals, and friction in children.

Chocolate Fondue Day: February 5

Chocolate fondue is an American invention from 1966, and Chalet Suisse in New York City created it. The restaurant ceased to exist after the late 1980s, but the delicious social dessert has become popular within the past five years (all those Gen Xers like myself who grew up with fondue in the 1970s). The story goes that when Chalet Suisse relocated to fifth and 49th in New York City, the Swiss chocolate manufacturer of a new product called Toblerone was looking for a way to market the chocolate bar. Their publicist Beverly Allen made a sweet fondue from the candy bar. The Swiss people thought she was nuts. Knorad Egi, the Swiss-born chef of Chalet Suisse, didn’t think it was a crazy idea, and chocolate fondue was born.

Guru Ravidas Jayanti (H)(S)(1377): February 5

Today marks the birthday of Hindu Guru Ravidas, who was born on this month's full moon in 1377 AD or 1450 AD, depending upon the source (historians disagree). Each year on this day, the faithful form an Aarti and a Nagar Kirtan procession with the guru's portrait displayed. It is a festival atmosphere of music and dance as the crowd makes its way to the local temple. When a river is near, devotees immerse in the water to perform rites. Guru Raviass was one of the first civil rights activists. He taught that one is distinguished not by one's caste (jāti) but by one's actions (karma) and that everyone has the right to worship God and read holy texts. Today is a day in the Hindu and Sikh calendars set aside to honor him. PLEASE NOTE: We use the Indian civil calendar, the official holiday calendar in India. The Hindu faith has many calendars, each specific to different regions and tribes, with dates and celebrations marked by differing positions of the sun, moon, and stars. Magha Puja, Māgha Pūjā, Makha Bucha, or the full moon of Tabodwe, is a Buddhist holy day celebrated at the full moon during the month of Māgha in Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, and Myanmar. It marks the anniversary of the gathering of 1250 disciples with the Buddha, who did not have an invitation in 531 BC. Magha Puja is a public holiday where observant Buddhists refrain from sinning and spend the day purifying their minds and souls.

A full moon occurs when the moon is illuminated by the sun and on the opposite side of the earth. Its ecliptic longitude is 180 degrees. For centuries, people have applied names to full moons to track the seasons and as a point of reference. The names listed below come from Native American and Colonial American traditions passed down through generations. Here are the common names for full moons in each month in the Northern Hemisphere (the Southern Hemisphere doesn't do this tradition): January: Wolf Moon—Named after the howling of wolves during the cold winter nights. February: Snow Moon—Named for the typically heavy snowfall. March: Worm Moon—As the ground thaws, earthworms emerge, attracting birds. April: Seed Moon—Time to plant for the fall harvest. May: Flower Moon—Named for the abundance of flowers in May. June: Strawberry Moon— due to the short harvesting season for strawberries in the northeastern United States. July: Buck Moon—when new antlers grow on male deer (bucks). August: Sturgeon Moon—when sturgeon fish are abundant in North America's Great Lakes. September: Harvest Moon—time to harvest crops. October: Hunter's Moon—game is at its fattest, allowing hunters to stock up for the winter months. November: Beaver Moon—when beavers build their winter dams. December: Cold Moon—long, dark, and cold nights. Full moon names vary between cultures, regions, and traditions; several full moons have alternative names. The above are the most common. A blue moon occurs when two full moons are in a single month, and February is the only month in the year that occasionally does not have a full moon. A blood moon describes a total lunar eclipse.

Move Hollywood & Broadway to Lebanon, Pennsylvania Day: February 5

Wellcat Herbs has created a unique niche for itself by inventing crazy holidays, and this is one. Lebanon, Pennsylvania, was once the home office of the David Letterman show. The logic goes if one media icon could make Amish country home, why not the rest of Hollywood or Broadway? There was a 2010 Indy film called Lebanon, PA. Though the film was titled for the city, it was filmed elsewhere in Pennsylvania. It hardly seems fair!
